Hey guys, looking for some advice on satin finishing using scotchbrite belts. I've been using a ghetto 1x30 sander and could not get SB belts to work on it but it's time for me to upgrade to a kalamazoo 1x42 tonight.

What scotchbrite belts would you use for the brushed satin look? I'm looking for a very nice satin finish, but not mirror. On my 1x30 i've been using cork belts loaded with compound but I always end up with too much of a mirror finish and I end up starting over.

I see there are a few different scotchbrite belts, so I was wondering what grit/color I should pick up and when should I start using them? I can't seem to find any info.

Also, what's a good place to buy them?

Also, are these belts used with no compound? I'm thinking of just going with a medium belt. Maybe 220 grit AO then scotchbrite medium?

Hi 230grains,

Typically you don't use compound with Scotchbrite. I have tried it and it seems to have no effect at all. Medium would certainly work, but I have had pretty good luck going right from 220/240 to a Fine Scotchbrite and then Ultrafine. For a quick satin finish, Scotchbrite is worth it's weight in gold. You will want all of them!

Have fun!

I would try supergrit.com. I was pricing some a while back and if I recall they were very competitive and had all grits in stock.

I've been using red scotch brite pads to satin finish by hand, but I've been interested in the belts as well. I might look around some more today and will let you know if I find out anything else.

Hmm, does the fine scotchbrite belt give more of a satin or mirror finish? I'm putting out a lot of money tonight so ideally i only want to grab one finishing belt for now.

Also, where should i buy them? Thanks for your help!

The Medium is the typical brushed finish.

You will not get a mirror finish with any grit Scotchbrite belt. I would get the fine if I were you but you won't be unhappy with the medium. I get mine at www.mscdirect.com .
