Satin or Matte blade on custom camping / survival knife?

I have a feeling that it may be a good idea to be careful when you're using a buffer:D

I talked to him today and he advised me to go with the satin. Its not mirror, but not far off. I wont be buffing, the reward doesnt seem to match the risk of injury. Besides, Im getting this as a tool, I dont care if it looks pretty, it just needs to work well. If it REALLY needs some work done to it at some point, I'll worry about it then and talk it over with the knife maker I guess.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Good choice. With the CPM S30V and a satin finish you should have no problems with rust given just a little care.

I was told by Joe Kious when I asked about this subject that:

1. A buffer is very dangerous...be very careful
2. Buffing will remove very little metal and it take it a long time to even remove a little.
3. Scratches on a mirror finish can rarely be removed with a buffer. It takes successive grits of sandpaper and elbow grease. Then you can polish with a buffer because it removes so little metal.
4. And finally he said buffers are dangerous...be careful.

Hum, guess I was just imaging I was removing scratches and didn't really buff away my crisp grind lines.

Thanks. Ive done pretty well with a high carbon blade, but it takes just a little too much care for my taste. I grew up using stainless and it will be nice to get back to it, even if its just psychological on my part.
