I've done all my knives to date with a mirror polish with varying degrees of success, just because I thought that was what folks did. I like to try a satin finish. There was a good thread about mirror polish recently, but when I did a search on "satin finish" I got about a 1000 posts. So just how does one do a satin finish?? Thanks.

i use different methods to put a satin finish on. you can use a worn 400 grit belt or put one on by hand with finer abrasive paper. i sometimes use scotchbrite wheels. you can see the wheels at this link. http://mysite.verizon.net/ress6fq6/id22.html if you want more info send me an email with your number and i'll call you.

a scotch brite pad or belt works well, I've never used the belt, just the pads. Take it to 200 - 400 grit with the belt grinder or by hand and then use nice even strokes in one direction with the burgundy scotch brite pad.

400 grit machine finish, followed by a 400 grit handrubbed finish

220 grit machine finish, followed by a medium scotch-brite surface conditioning belt

Have fun.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a try. I can feel the callouses already!
