Every year we go fishing for carp at lake henshaw in San Diego county. The reason for that is that the carp has a much more sweet flavor then any other lake i fished. My mom makes gefilte fish for the holidays. She likes when everyone asks her how come hers taste so much better:D .

The lake was under heavy fog and you can see the steam still rises behind my dad

Our haul for the day wasnt as big as always but very healthy fish. We had atlist 70lb of fish more likely about 80. Most of the time we catch about 120lb or more.

When cleaning the fish we had a cool older guy walk up to us. He was from NC and was surprised that we like to fish for carp. He used to eat them as a kid, As he said when you hungry you would eat anything. Now he loves to eat carp lol. He is a long time hunter from NC. Before we left he gave us a bag of Pheasant breasts, after he found that we are russians lol. Got to love talking to older people they are so much more intresting. Nothing us younger guys lol.

Nice photos, Sasha. It looked like a beautiful day of fishing.

I love to fish. One of my oldest childhood memories, and my first fishing memory, was when my father (who was NOT a fisherman) took me fishing on the shore of Lake Champlain one spring. The carp were spawning and lots of them were cruising the shallow shoreline, thrashing and splashing around.

When a group of them swam up the shoreline right to where we were fishing, I quickly yanked my line out of the water and ran! I was little and they were BIG! :p

As kids, we used to catch some huge carp in the lake but we always put them back as we were told they weren't good to eat.

Good fishing,

Desmobob, Im sure your dad was laughing his head off watching you run lol. As for Carp not good to eat. The only problem are the bones which they have 3 times more then any one needs. You come over here one time and i shall take you fishing for carp. We would clean it and cook it right there on the spot for lunch or dinner. I bet i would change your mind 90% the other 10% are the bones that would annoy you. The meat is so sweet and good tasting that you keep on eating. They would start spawning next month over here and thats the time to catch the realy big cat fish that try to eat the eggs that they lay.

What kind of rig is that? Ive never seen anything like it. How does it work?

I bowfish for carp. My dad refers to them as poor mans shrimp, so they can't be that bad..

Bushman5, I never had a problem they allow 5 hooks on each line. Those rigs have 6 but when you tell them its for carp they dont care as long as you catch as much carp as you can. Every one hates carp for some reason. 3 years ago at this same lake i meet a british chap that couldnt understand why Americans hate carp. We shared lots of fishing tips. He loved the rigs i showed him.

yea its our area, we are drowning in fishing regulations, in some cases, they dictate what weights you can or cannot use, or how they are rigged. Same with scents , in some spots you are not allowed to use scents or bait on your hook.

The Game the meat of the carp is realy good tasting the only problem are the bones. If not the bones that would be the most popular fish out there. You should try it.
DipBait, My dad gets them at a korean store in the area. Thats the two kinds they sell. As you can see on one of them there are some left over bait on the main body. You put the bait on there and the spring helps keep the bait on so it wont fall. The bait can easy last on there for an hour or longer. The way the carp feeds is when it smells food its starts sucking like a vacuume around the bait. The hooks are laying on the ground he ends up sucking it in. Ends up getting it stuck on his lip. It happend before when they tried to fight the rest of the hooks would stick in the body as well. Those hooks are extremly sharp, Never had any hooks from a store sharper then the korean ones.
Now for the bait. My dad buy the dry powder from the same store that you need to mix with water a night before. But i prefer to use my own recipe and my dad and me argue every time we go fishing whos better. We didnt settle on it yet as both work great. Some days one would work better the other days the other.
For cooking my mom makes gefilte fish which is a Europe Jewish food made mostly for pass over.

Another way to cooke it which is more or Russian common man or some say poor fisherman dish. In a very large pot you put some oil and choped onion. You cook the onion till dark brown then add water bay leaves salt and lots of black peper. Then add the fish that you cut into 2-3 inch long chunks then you add potatos. Cover and cook on mid heat. When the potatoes are done the food is ready. Its realy is good if you mix in there catfish with the carp. Sometimes its a good idea to let it good for another 15-20 min after the potatoes are done. It realy gets the meat and the bones separat more.

Bushman5 that sucks. How can you catch fish with no bait on the hook?? Are you just suppost to lower your hook in the water and hope the fish would just go for it??? Maybe we all should move to Russia with no rules or regulation and do as you please mentality..

I fish for carp a lot. I chum the area with corn, and fermented beans. Then I use corn on octopus hooks. Use a one ounce sinker and keep the line tight. The carp fill the weight then bolt. Its exciting fishing.

Those rigs you have are awesome.Id like to ty them.

nice pics sasha, i too love eating carp and i have a few of those rigs lying around that i brought over from korea.

too bad i cant use them over here though, nice to see that they're effective.

thanks for sharing.

Ive been catching a lot of suckers. I have never ate them. In the Ozarks they are popular.

I'm not sure why the prejudice against carp, but there sure is. As a kid I remember the way we were supposed to cook carp. You needed a board, often pine was cited as preferred. You put the carp(s) on the board and put it in the oven on a low heat for several hours. When done you were supposed to throw the carp away and eat the board. I like Sasha's Mom's recipes WAY better!!!

i tried eating carp once but it tasted like mud. isnt there a certain way you have to clean them?

DipBait if you want next time my dad goes there i would ask him to pick up two of each and i can UPS them to you.. Carp likes sweets. So i might as well tell you my sort of secret recipe for the bait as well lol. If you knew how many people asking me for it. So its between you and me and the rest of the guys on here lol. A cup and a half of water boil it add a cup and a half of white suger stir it in on low heat. Then add a cup of white flour mix it as best as you can. turn the stove off, Now you would have some sort of whitish clear goo. I like to use italian intant corn meal. Add alittle at a time and keep mixing it in. Its should be very sticky keep adding more corn meal. It should be about one to one and a half cups of corn meal.Toward the end you might have to wet your hands so you can keep working it. Its hard to explain the texture but you would get the feel for it. Take a hand full out or the ball of bait you just made. Into that add some peanut butter sometime if nothing else works that would. You never know so migh as well have some on hand. When you put it on the rig you would find out that it wont come off easy. I like to always have a rig made up before to let it dry just a little on it. When i catch one fish i take the old rig of the line and put this one on. This way i get the line in faster. Yesterday most people walked away with 2-3 fish some with none. In less then an hour our spot was full of people till we almost got into a shoving match. They thought it was the spot we were in. They still didnt catch any. Now what my dad is using its a premixed and it does work well. Some days one works better then the other. But one of them always works yesterday both worked.

Sasha,

If I ever plan a trip to California, I'll try to make it in the spring so you can take me carp fishing. I've been salmon fishing in Washington, striper and bluefish fishing in Massachusetts, walleye and pike fishing in Canada, weakfish fishing in Florida, trout fishing in Vermont, and have fished for most everything that swims here in NY. A carp fishing trip to California would be an interesting addition to my list!

Bon apetit,

Carp likes sweets.

Sasha,

I have read that here in the east, the love to eat the sweet ripe mulberries that fall into the water. The magazine article said that die-hard fly fisherman catch them on spun deer hair flies trimmed in the shape of mulberries and soaked in mulberry juice!

Carp on a fly rod... now that sounds like fun. They are strong fighters!

Stay sharp,
desmobob

Richard you dont need to clean the carp any diffrent. I do keep the roe clean it up from the sack and but it in the pot as well. It gets very firm when cooked and a nice flavor. BUT alot depands on the place you fish at. One time i went to Big Bear lake where alot of people go for carp. We had a killer day with many carps over 9lb and some over 14lb. When we got home and cooked it i almost puked it tasted so bad. Threw it all away. People laugh at me for driving 140 mile away for fishing. But that lake has clean water even the catfish i catch over there taste better. Suckers are from the carp family and taste same, So are Koi fish. Catfish taste great if you cook it same way as carp. I like it much more then fried and its healthy for you as well.
