Went down and picked up some cable from my favorite scrapyard. On the way home something very yellow/orange caught my eye. They were cutting down a tree near my house. I bought slung the dog out the window turning off the road.

It turned out to be a nice burly Osage Orange tree. I went home and grabbed the chainsaw. I wonder how many years before I can use these.

Nice score. I do the same thing, always looking for burls. I also check how close the house is and if they can hear the chainsaw. :D

There's a maple burl I've got my eye on that looks like the head of an elephant, trunk and all. That one would require some stealth to harvest :) public land.

Just run a couple of signs off on your computer that says, "Acme Tree Repair", or something similar, tape them to the doors of your truck, and just make a quick in, and out.
Anyone asks, just tell them you're removing a form of tree cancer!:D;)

Ya done good Bro! Cable and burl! I'd like to see that wood someday, a good macro shot, I bet it's NICE!

Mark, Just remember where you stashed it. I could check with Wayne about how long it takes to season. How'd it look? Sounds like it could turn out to be pretty awsome.

That's one of the burls I've not seen yet.
If you get tired  of looking at it, send it my way...

Ray , the figure looks sort of like swirls and eyes. I dont think I've ever seen any osage burl before. I'm tempted to dry some in Deb's kiln, just to be able to play with it sooner.

Chuck Burrows was telling me about reading somewhere that folks have had some luck just using the microwave to dry wood.

There was a very recent posting from someone who lived near a plant that did that .It's not a kitchen microwave . It combines microwave and vacuum. www.heatwave.com I've just checked their website - it's been updated - they're in receivership !

I've got the patience of a 4 year old. Had to try a piece. Dryed a small hunk in the microwave just to see what I have. Sorry for the crappy pic. I'm jittery as gitout from all the coffee I've had today.

Looks interesting. When you sending it to me for a thorough eval? I'd even settle for one of thos icky green pieces... :D

You would'nt be interested in selling a small chunk of that would ya? I need some to turn some pens, and have'nt been able to find any I liked the looks of. I don't need much, maybe a piece 2x4x6.

Hey Mark ol' buddy, when I was heavy into woodturning, the general rule-of-thumb was one-year of drying per inch of thickness. Really twisted wood may need an extra year on top of that. Also, it was well-known that the grain and texture of the wood was usually bunged of any means other than natural seasoning was used. There is nothign like naturally-seasoned wood. That said, try waxing up the grain ends, and set each one in a paper bag. Write the date on the bags and stash 'em away for a couple years. You'll be in the chips!

When you dry wood this way are you able to use it right away?

Hey Mark. Don't forget where you put it so I can have a look when I come down on the 16th.

Dang, NICE SCORE, MARK! I have cut a lot of Osage and have never seen burl in that stuff. That burl is absolutely beautiful. You painted the edges with latex? It works.

Nice score, can never find trees like that around here. We have all healthy trees except for pine :barf:
