I can tell that the microwave drying could cause problems. It did cause a crack, but that's because I let it get too hot trying to figure out how long per cycle. I guess if you did it exactly by the directions in the link that Mike put up it would work. You can tell that it does change the fiber in the wood. It would definately be better for it to dry slow.

Yep that's three coats of latex paint on the wood to seal it. I've got it stashed away in the attic with a date on it that says. do not use till 2008. That's a scarey thought.

First,don't ruin it in the microwave! That burl will really look good when dry in a year or two.After six months you could talk to Barbara over at Yukon Lumber and see if she will kiln dry it for you.If you can spare a slice,let me know.I would love to slow dry some for two years ,or so,and stabilize it.
