So, where can I find some black rubber cement?

Nice grab David. I guess you can still call it a grab after 24 hours

I was seriously considering it, but just wasn't sure about the size. It found the home it was supposed to go to.

Let me know what you think of it when it arrives!

David, nice grab, this one must have been waiting for you. Be sure to take this one out for a workout and think about how much knife you just got for $125.

Yeah, I think this one was waiting for me. I had already decided to get a GRS, and I had just successfully cleaned some rust off another blade. This will definitely be a lot of knife for the price.

I'll check the local auto store, Uncle Bill.

BTW, the package streak remains alive (see my first post above). Came home to find another UPS notice on my door (Paladin Press videos

), which makes this the 6th day in a row for receiving boxes. There are still three packages incoming (GRS, D2 Sifu, and ASP baton), so I could keep the streak going until Friday. Hmm, think I have enough weapons?

:
David it sounds like you're just getting started with your collection.

One of these days I am gonna count all my knives that are actually usable or ones that I would and do actually use.

Some are made for taking life and generally human life only.
Those are the ones I keep just to look at and wonder if they've actually ever been used for their purpose.
And when it comes down to the wire I really don't want to know.

I found this stuff at the local auto store, is it what I want? They also had Naval Jelly. Just out of curiosity, would this work on brass or just steel?

My collection has been rapidly growing recently, but I also have a lot of old pocket knives lying around that I need to clean up. I'll get pics online eventually.

David I don't know how the Permatex would work on the scabbard but it may be worth a shot. If it doesn't work a little solvent would clean it off for the next try.
If it was me and I could stretch the torn leather to somewhere near together my 1st attempt to fix it would be to super glue it together as close as possible to the wood and then use several coats of KIWI on it if it didn't look to bad.

As far as the rust goes I saw where a fellow had recommended Hoppe's #9 gun cleaning solvent and a copper bore brush for rust removal on a knife.
I think it was the #9, it may have been another number as I'm not familiar with that brand.

I firmly believe that any fix on anything should be the one that uses the least aggresive action, for the 1st attempt anyway.
It may not be the easiest way, but I have found that this way generally causes less harm.

I just finished cleaning the knife of a co-worker, who was astounded because there was rust on his "stainless" knife. Amazing how that'll happen when you clean fish with it, rinse it in the saltwater, and put it back in the sheath isn't it? Anyway a little 3-n-1 oil and some Mother's mag and Alluminum Polish did the trick. But there was no pitting in this scenario either.

I don't think that Permatex adhesive will work well. However, they do make a clear 2 part epoxy that would be excellent for gluing leather back together. Contact cement usually works but it is no where as strong as epoxy. The trip with contact cement is to apply two coats before pressing the parts together.

Permatex is part of Loc-tite. They have an extensive selection of super glue, epoxy, and sealants.

Thanks for the assistance, guys. Hopefully the GRS is waiting at the post office for me now, so I'll be back for more help once I see the damage first-hand.

When I was at the craft shop picking up sandpaper, I noticed they did have some sort of adhesive (may have been epoxy) specifically for leather repair. Maybe that will be the way to go.

Also, where can I find Flitz, aside from their website? I have yet to find a well-stocked auto parts store locally. Would somebody like Wal-Mart or Home Depot carry it? Currently I use Marine Tuf-Cloth on all my knives, but I'm working on expanding the maintenance toolkit. Need to protect my investment!

Weird evening.

Let's just say I'm glad I have plenty of weapons at hand.

Anyway, my D2 Sifu arrived today, and my first thought was, "Whoa, big knife!" Everybody should have one of these, especially if you can carry it legally (like in VA). It's like folding up a khukuri and putting it in your pocket.

Then I got the GRS. This monster redefines "big knife". I can see why Ganga Ram says it's magical. It doesn't really like to cut cardboard, but I bet it could split my kitchen table.

The rust damage is really minor. I think a good polishing will take care of it. Uncle Bill's QC standards for blades are obviously very strict. The scabbard will need a bit more work. There's the tear at the mouth, mainly because the opening is a little tight for removing the blade. There's also a split on the back near the tip. I feel comfortable experimenting with adhesives on this, because it won't normally be seen. Also, I think the frog is a bit loose, so I'll try and shrink the frog and stretch the mouth at the same time.

I'll let everybody know how it goes.

:
David sometimes, if the frog's really loose, I unlace the frog, being very careful to see how it's laced to begin with and trim one side of nice and even right at the holes.
Then I punch new holes matching up where the old ones were and relace it.
You do have to be careful because if you get it too tight it won't go over the angle on the scabbard.
I have done that a couple of times and had to soak the frog thouroughly to get it stretched enough to go over the angle, but when it dries after this treatment it's on to stay.
