As has already been discussed on this and the other Spyderco forum, the production of an automatic clipit is something that Spyderco has been considering for a while. It has been generally accepted for some time that the C100 would be an automatic.

Latest word leaked to the other forum appears to indicate that this is now in doubt - both regarding the C100, and as to whether there will ever be an auto produced by Spyderco.

So I would like to be able to show Sal and Spyderco the level of interest that an automatic clipit has for us.

If such a knife would interest you, please show your support here in this thread.

Personally, I'd like to see something like an auto Military. If you are interested, what would interest you?

I'd like to see a Double Action (auto/manual) on a new design.

regarding my level of interest for an auto, I'd say that I wasn't very happy when I saw the first fixed blades produced by Spyderco, I thought it was the worst idea ever... a company famous all over the world for making great folders trying to extend to the fixed blade market, I feared a failure. I was wrong, it was a Success and now the same great folder company hesitates to produce an auto which is the Formula 1 of the folder world... I'm confused

if it has to be a one time thing, the 100th spyderco is the perfect occasion!

As a Spyderco collector, I would consider a "first" of anything as a must have piece, but that does not mean I think an automatic is a good idea.

Frank truth is that I have zero interest in automatics and cannot fully understand why Spyderco would choose to produce, especially as their "Number 100" folder, a style of knife that is completely illegal in some areas, illegal to carry in many others and most importantly that Sal's inventive mind rendered unnecessarily complex with the introduction of the round hole.

I think it'd be a wonderful addition to my collection, and to the knife world in general. There are very few practical, high-quality _work_ autos out there, and practical, high-quality work knives are Spyderco's forte. Plus it's encouraging to see "respectable" mainstream companies endorsing autos. So I think it's a great idea.

But I can't guarantee I'd buy one. It's hard to justify the added difficulty and expense of purchasing a feature that prevents me from carrying the knife. Especially here in Jersey, where they think the Second Amendment is a ska band. :(

So while I'd be thrilled to see a Spyderco production auto, Sal's reluctance is totally understandable.

Military Auto or even better D/A would be awesome...

... and perfectly legal where I live :D

Automatic Knives are illegal in many countries

In Germany, automatic knives are legal with a blade length up to 85 mm / 3.3 ".
An automatic knive the size of a Military would be illegal.
So please make C100 a little bit smaller.

I'm personally supprised that I haven't seen a custom maker that made a D/A auto using the Spyderhole.

If Spyderco made an auto, I'd buy it. I'd especially like to see a Military style scale release D/A. In fact, I'd almost expect it to be a D/A, since I can't fathom Spyderco making a folding knife that didn't have a Spyderhole.

I'm not getting my hopes up though.

I think it's a bad idea. Because SPyderco makes knives in unique styles they are easily identifiable as Spydercos. And the name will become ascociated with autos. Then any knife with an opening hole will be illegal from people not knowing any better.

I'd hate to see spyderco slip into the me too mall ninja wannabe crowd.

if spyderco does make an auto (and i hope they do), i would think that it would be priced above the average mall ninja's monetary means.

and to be fair there are plenty of spyderco knives that are illegal in many parts of the US as well as in other countries. some to to length restriction, locks, one hand opening, and lets not forget the spyderfly. i mean if there is one kind of knife that can rival the "evilness" of an auto is a butterfly knife.

Carlos,

I would be greatly interested in such a knife. Even though automatic knives are illegal to *carry* here they are not illegal to possess.

I like the idea. Just stick with the form follows function design philosophy, an auto dodo or native or para mili would be great. I think as long as the knife was made for military/le/rescue that would overcome any negative publicity. BM makes lots of autos and bais and it don't seem to hurt them any. I think spydie could do it better and maybe get one fo those nice gov contracts.

Yup. My vote for a D/A, that is the same package as a police or endura. slim and a lot of blade.

An automatic would make a great collector's piece. Objections would be that it would be 'iffy' to use and carry, both due to laws and the presumed higher than usual price. Great collectible, not that great a user design for me.

Please limit blade length to around 3 inches for this part of the world!

I think Spyderco is better off leaving the autos to others. I must say that I would not be interested.

i mentioned to my buddy the other day that i wish that spyderco produced an automatic..he has a kershaw that has real smooth action..i wouldn't want to see a style redone w.auto..i would like to see a completely different model..

Definitly not interested. A Spyder with the hole is as fast as most autos.
IMHO only value would be to collectors.
