Save the Spyderco automatic clipit.

Personally, I'd like to see something like an auto Military. If you are interested, what would interest you?
I'd like to see it done with the Military as well, but I wouldn't want to see it get too fat in order to accomodate the auto mechanism. I'm in.!!!

I tend to agree with those who feel that the hole is as fast as the auto. Also, that Spyderco might have a harder time with QC and service, if the laws are such that these things cannot be done in Golden. I am not saying that an auto wouldn't sell; most of the posts to this thread show that it would. What I -am- saying is that I personally wouldn't have a need for one.
Having said all that..... there is no promise made that I wouldn't, someday, own one :D

As Brownshoe mentioned, Spyderco has always been a tool company. Our specialty has always been reliable high performance cutting tools.

Because of our specialty, much of our customer base is Govt agencies (DEA, CIA, FBI, etc), military, Law enforcement, Rescue, etc.

It is their requests for product that influences what we produce. The MBC pieces that we produced were in fact to service that market. Sales generally determine what we keep.

We have been asked constantly to produce autos by the same market.

Colorado does not have a provision for autos to be made and/or sold in the State. In effect, we have been "geographically challenged". As a result of the many requests we are geting for autos from Military and Law enforcement professionals, the local government is in the process of changing the law to permit Spyderco to manufacture autos for distribution to Military and Law Enforcement professionals.

Under the terms of the new law, to what extent will civilians be restricted from purchasing Spyderco autos?

Excellent news. Looks like Spyderco will be able to produce and distribute knives from Golden CO. I doubt this will change law for puchase or carry in CO and it certainly will not affect any other state's laws. Looks like the folks in CO want to keep Spyderco there ;) .

That's the kind of news I like to hear.

I see 2 good things coming from Spyderco making autos.

1. Quality knives with an honest and fair warranty behind them.

2. The most innovatinve knife company forcing the most innovative auto company (Microtech) to wake up, pull their heads out of their collective keister, and treat their customers properly else they be eaten by Spyderco.

My concern is that the local gov't is making an exception "to permit Spyderco to manufacture autos for distribution to Military and Law Enforcement". So it's not inconcievable that they might require it be marketed like the CRMIPT (sold only to law enforcement and security professionaly, no exceptions), or even marked "LEO only". Even if it doesn't go that far, there could be restrictions that just make it more dificult for a civilian to buy one.

DOn't get me wrong; I'm not gonna bash Spyderco for seelin' out to the man. :D If there're any legal hurdles to civilian purchase, well, it looks like the tiny demographic of BadeForumite knife nuts wasn't the target audience anyway. I'm just curious about the nature of the exemption, and what it'll mean for me _if_ I ennd up wanting one.

Spyderco can manufacture large automatic knives for the Military / Law Enforcement agencies and something less than 2” for civilians. To my understanding, it is legal to possess and carry an automatic knife that is less than 2” long in Los Angeles, California. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks in advance.
