Saved (sort of) by my ZT0550; Alas...she didn't fare well.

By the way, if they don't replace the blade and you have to buy another one, you could always have the blade reground to a size that actually legal in New York! Haha. I'm just kidding, I don't actually even know the NY knife laws. I just know they're supposed to be strict and I think no locking mechanism and sub 3" blades is the only completely legal way to do it, but meh. That's boring.

It's really a drag when people who don't know the law try to tell us about it! :D

Under 4" is OK, and the 0550 is 3.5". Locking is technically all right, but not if they can centrifuge the blade out. That's not the law, it's the current Manhattan interpretation.

correct, a clip showing will get you stopped and frisked on sight. I used to live in New York.

After all you went through to get that thing perfect and you go and break it!! No seriously thats pretty awesome. These are those things you just cant prepare for, and using what you have is the only way. If I had claustrophobia I would have done the same thing. I think for as close to the tip as that was, it did an admirable job. Keep us updated and maybe now you will carry a large flat head in your case or pack or whatever you use ( I hope not a murse!) for future incidents!

You've got that right. I don't take my home building's elevator now, I just walk up to the 5th floor. A decent stretch some nights before the gym I guess. I'll get over it eventually, and I'm about to go searching for a small pry bar. I'm not sure why I never carried one before. It's likely because my Leatherman has always served me well in that department, as I filed down the tip of the large flat driver to be more appropriate for that.

Most days I carry a large laptop bag, and it holds everything. I'm always out for the entire day. Work, class, etc. So, I've got my LM, a knife, and a Victorinox Compact in my back pocket with my wallet. For the work I do, I really don't NEED something like a ZT, but it is just much more comfortable. I do IT work for a small accounting firm, as well as maintenance and other assistant work for a couple of recording studios. I'm sure the LM blade would work, but the amount of cutting I do in a given week is actually substantial. A lot of packages; consumables like drum heads, cables of all sorts, sticks, picks, writable media, paper products, etc. I deal with more duct tape than I'd care to in a given lifetime, and all of this makes me want something fun and comfortable to use. So, the ZTs kind of just fell into my pocket/bag. They're good conversation pieces with other musicians, and my accountant boss appreciates that I collect.

This little mishap kind of had me smacking myself, since I had seen, wanted, and just never got around to picking up a nice pry bar. Oh well, it's all good now, and looking back to yesterday it already seems like a distant memory. I wish I had found the tip though... I could've blunted the edge and made a necklace out of it or something.

I'm glad to know that blade can take that stress that well!

Haha. Like I said, I don't actually know the NY knife laws for realz. I thought you were only allowed to carry Spyderco Slipits, lol. And what's this business with lots of dealers being unwilling to even ship knives to NY?

Dude, you know that STR makes (made?) some nice looking Ti pry bars. :friendly_wink:

There's a knife company that makes sharpened prybars. It's called Busse.....

Good thing that wasn't me. I probably wouldn't have remained cool enough to actually think about getting out of there. I'd probably just get pissed off and stab the elevator until it let me out.

Grind that bad boy into a tanto and call it a day! Dont get rid of that particular blade, that bad boy saved your ass kinda.
