Saving old scales?

Got 2 antique blades that the scales are loose on kne end and pulling away from the tang. One is a 14" Clyde cutlery butcher and the other a 3 lb Lamson bone cleaver. I can clamp them down.

What are the odds I can get them to reattach or just punt, remove and remake?

Can get pics later. I have no use for that massive butcher but want to keep it to match the 14" cimeter I have.

Depending on how loose, you may be able to get some 24hr epoxy, heat it up until runny, then get it under them. You may be able to drive the pins out, then just redo.

Depends on what the handles are made of. Horn and similar materials can be softened with mild heat.

Also depends on what the scales look like underneath when you pull them off. I rehandled a knife for my grandmother and the scales had started rotting on the inside from years of hand washing in a sink with a gap.

Some pics More I look at them I'm thinking re handling is called for.

If you are fixing them as wall hangers, just epoxy/CA and re-sand. If you want to use them, remove the handles and replace the wood using Corby bolts.
