Saving photo size for avatar

Gday guys,

Once I have played around with a knife pic in Photoshop, what are the best settings to use to save it so its still suitable for an avatar.
My avatar at the moment, to me, is a reasonably good photo but once I reduce it to avatar size you cant really make out a lot.
Or do I need to take better photos????

you are limited by the number of pixels displayed in an avatar. If you want to see more detail of a knife, you should crop in on a portion of it.
