saw blade steel

Hi everyone. I got some large saw blades maby 16'' in diameter and i have anealed some pices. I thought i would try to harden to see what happened.
I quenched in water and this stuff got so hard a file would skate.
I took one chunk and hit with a hammer and it shatered like glass.
Dose anyone have aney ideas what this steel might be.
P.S. it was heated to 1500 before quench.

I would try hardening another piece and temper it a couple of cycles, then try the hammer test.

It seems to work better if you differentially heat treat the edge in oil.

Since you are a metal worker, you have an advantage over some others when dealing with found steels. As said, finding out the exact allow is the way to go.

One reason that a simple hardness test isn't the whole story is that there may be lots of other alloy ingredients in the steel that will or won't aid in making a blade. Between .60 and 1.00 percent carbon , are several hundred steels. The spark test and quench test will only tell you that the steel is perhaps one of them. Some have chromium, or molybdenum, or sulfur,or manganese, or tungsten, or...........?????? ,and in what amounts???? Every one of these can greatly affect the steel properties.

Have fun and try and find the manufacturers specs.Or send a sample to Matt for a test.
