Saw Farenheit 9/11

As N2S observed, we are political creatures. When bad things happen to good people the political system is usually a part of the problem. Uncle Bill wants HI to remain a haven for those of us who have problems with life. He wants us to be able to speak from the heart without having to weigh each word when vomiting it up is in order. Those in angst aren't held as accountable ( edit: as they'd be otherwise ), as they aren't thinking straight at the time, and understandably so.

So politics in those circumstances - when one is speaking from the heart - and some other circumstances, is acceptable.

But a deliberate and sustained campaign to keep bringing political issues into the forum to change forum policy as Hollowdweller did was ruining the enjoyment of the forum for considerably more than a few. That had to be stopped and it has been done.

I meant to copy the moved thread to the backend forum PLUS leave a copy on the HI forum. I screwed up and hit the wrong button, and once it is on the Backend forum even I can't go back and change things. Sorry.

The thing that got Hollowdweller booted was that he wanted to get politics off the HI forum. He was told that he wasn't going to get the forum changed. At that time he began dragging political stuff into the forum every chance he got.

It was as if he couldn't get his way so he would ruin the forum for everybody. Until we saw the light and gave in to his way.

OK, got it. Thanks for clarifying. Too bad. Funny how something can work well for so many folks, but there is always one person who has an itch to change things around to their exact way of thinking or doing things.

regards,

Norm

Shouldn't it be tread on others with lovingkindness?
 :D
I thought it was "Don't tread on me" with a pic of a snake....or something like that.

:D

I avoioded all those threads because I felt that little but ill feeling would come from them. I have seen other political threads here that went along well enough but the ones of late have been a little to heated and personal to me. I enjoy coming here too much and sharing with people that I would like to consider my friends to let a couple threads about political view alone change how I feel about them or rob me of the enjoyment that I get from the Cantina and all that come here.

Mark - I agree with you on this. Some things have gotten too heated, and less civil than they should.

Ruin the forum? Huh? How, by exercising his right to free speech? Happy 4th of July Kantinistas.

It is very easy for me (or anyone) to ruin a great number of peoples day by using my right to free speech. That does not make it the right thing to do or what is needed here in this place with the people that come here.

edited to add: no one here at the Bladeforums has free speech. Read where you signed up at this site. Spark sets the rules and Uncle Bill and Rusty enforce them as they see fit.

I've sometimes wondered what "freedom of speech" means. I figure it means that if someone wanted to start a khomunist khukuri forum they could without fearing being shut down by the government.

Would it mean that if I went to this forum and told them that "Mao could go suck rocks" it would be freedom of speech? I guess it would be, if the government didn't come and shut it down. However, the forum being frequented by khommie khuk knuts, I would expect to have some level of disagreement. Still, the government doesn't step in, so there still is freedom of speech. However the debating style of some folks may consist of calling people names and other wonderful things but still no interference from the government.

However, the forum being a privately owned place the mods for whatever reason could choose to ban me for saying Castro doesn't look good in green or whatever other whim and freedom of would not have been squelched because it's not a government run board. Freedom of speech allows me to set up my own khapatalist khukuri forum where I could ban whomever I want.

At least that's how my little brain understands it.

Sort of like going to Nasty's house and cussing him out. The government doesn't stop me from saying such things but I probably could expect to bring my teeth home in a paper bag. Probably not a very good illustration but sort of "You can say in most cases what you want and the government won't stop you but you may have to deal with the private citizen who disagrees".

I'm gonna go count my teeth.

Ok,if its going to make somebody uneasy, then I hereby withdraw my candidacy for President.
I didnt think I could be Bush anyway.
I knew I had Kerry licked already, but...

Bruise,
I don't know what's been going on in your life, but you've come up with some killer posts lately. That was VERY well put.
Thank you.

Bruise, I think I'm going to save that post to my hard drive for posterity. Truly your finest work and the best description of free speech I've ever encountered (I especially like the part about Nasty's house and your teeth). :D Thanks for the laughs and truths as always.

I might hand you your teeth in a bag Bruise, but you still have dibs on a kidney! ;)

Great post Bruise!! I wish more people had your grasp of the reality of free speach.

I dunno if Hollow is still following this forum or not. I was offline for the past 4th weekend, but can help but feel responsible for his leaving. I will admit I am not the most left leaning of people. But the cantina has always been an open place, where all is welcomed. Karma is karma, life is life. Somedays it seems like everyone is against you. But just because we disagree on one small topic, does not mean much in the greater scheme of things. We have all been united in this forum, around strange bent knives made halfway round the world. If the political threads bother you, please just ignore them. Do not leave us. As a forum, this place will not be the same, if there is a feeling in which all are not welcome. Uncle Bill and Rusty have made a unique bastion in this world, in which we are all free to be that which we truly are, and in which we are surrounded by such quality people. Politics, no matter how heated, are not the only things that define us, despite what it may sometimes feel. Everyone has felt marginalized at one point or the other, whether imagined or real. But know this, you are welcomed here in my esteem. Do not go.

I am sad that Hollowdweller is banned. I always found his posts interesting. I once heard (not sure if I can translate ist into English correctly): freedom is the freedom of gesticulation - until you slap someone´s other face (and limit his freedom). Some may have felt a "slap" - and Rusty did his job, but I think bannig him makes this forum more, not less political than before.

I believe HD was given fair warning. He chose to continue to fight this battle in spite of the consequences, and thus he chose the outcome. But I don't think less of him for doing so and I will miss him. His actions demonstrated that he is strongly principled, which seems to be the norm around here no matter what your political persuasion may be. We all have at least one hill we are willing to charge.
