Yup. It can happen anywhere. There are stories of this happening at the big river site. I am sure it is much less likely with stores that deal only in knives like the many BFC paid dealers but there is no guarantee.

I bought a modem from Comp USA years ago (when they were still in business & people still used modems) and the box was full of flattened soda cans. :mad:

I didn't realize Spydercos were expensive enough to bother to counterfeit. I guess it's been a while since I looked at them. I always thought they were ugly & I guess I missed their transition into making higher quality stuff.

For the return scam to work you generally have to have an item.

Some shop in China makes a fake PM2 for pocket change and sells it for at least $20, and that is a pretty good profit. There is a guy on ebay who buys the $20 knock off PM2 from China and then sells it as the real deal for $140. If you go to the spyderco sub forum there is a sticky with lots of stories like this.

I've read here about counterfeits that had VERY good fit and finish. I guess the better the copy, the more $ they can sell them for. While their steel/HT may be inferior, it clearly shows the factory/company's ability to manufacture quality knives. Unfortunately, they would rather profit off someone else's reputation instead of building their own. :(

it's a whoooooooooole lot harder to build a brand than it is to copy and sell... ce la vis or however that's spelled.
IE Kershaw's to most people I know are STILL considered cheap knives... they see them for $20.00 in Walmart, yet when they see my Tyrade, or my ZT's they about crap themselves...

I see a LOTS of China Counterfeit Strider SMF better build than genuine ones , specially ANY Kevin John SMF at half the price...so...
