Here's one I finished up today. Its got an 8 3/4" blade made from an old lumber mill circular saw blade. Wagon wheel wrought iron fittings with a red stag crown. 14" overall.

Nice blade Ray, but the handle is simply too long for anyone but Paul Bunyan:D

Ray, it's great to see you in here again, it's been too long.

As for the handle length comment, I hope you let that one slide off your back. Given the crown material you used, I'm sure that it's just the perfect length. It looks just right to me:thumbup:

Wicked blade shape Ray.
That's only 5 1/4" including the ferrule and guard

That is an 8 3/4" blade, Kevin.....by my calculations the handle should be no longer than 5" and 4 3/4" would be better. If it was a 11-12" blade I could see it.

Does it not look a bit out of whack to you visually?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Looking Good ray looks like your getting ready for OKCA I hope your table is in my throwing rang

When approaching a 9" blade I want 5", with crown stag slightly more to insure comfort on the short side. I think the proportions look pretty good considering the crown stag.
Universally, I feel 1/4" too long is probably better than 1/4" too short.

I just commented because you sounded as though you thought it grotesquely long.

Nice work, Ray. I especially like the fittings. Considering the curve of the stag and flare of the crown I think the handle looks fine. Ratios might be a good rule of thumb but I don't they need to be held to steadfastly. Visually I'd prefer the edge to sit flush with the guard to about the point it slants, in the style of a Searles Bowie.

Steven, i might not be qualified to critique your comment, but many Foster Bowies look to me slightly short, lacking in the handle- and know you are a client of his knives, does he subscribe to your ideas on pseudo-standard measurement "calculations"?
David

1. You are not.

2. No

the only thing 'out of whack' in this thread, Steven, is your telling Ray he built his knife wrong. I don't find that funny at all, in fact I find it mean spirited, and your smiley doesn't change anything about what you said. Maybe if you stated your opinion straight up, and qualified it as a constructive criticism, it would be different, instead of veiling it with a 'funny'.

Unless there's some kind of inside joke here:confused:.

Fact is you rarely comment on maker's finished knives in this forum, and I don't understand why you'd pick on Ray this time. I like Ray, and that's why I give him props whenever I can. I like his knives, too, but I primarily regard Ray as a friend so it pisses me off that you'd sully his thread with your off hand remark out of the blue like that:thumbdn:.

It's crappy thoughtless comments like that that drive knife makers away from this forum. You can counter that with the ole 'knife makers gotta have a thick skin' schtick all you want, but I stand by everything I said.

Lorien, you frequently don't know when to hold your tongue, as if you actually know something.

I know Ray, have for well over 5 years.....Have handled his knives for years, he has a tendency to make the handles too big....we have discussed this face to face, so there is no surprise here.

I used to comment all the time, but got so sick of the lack of many forumites ability to "see", and instead suck up to their idols that I stopped because it was like beating my head against the wall. You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?

Ray burnt his shop down a few years ago, and I donated a knife to the auction used to help Ray get back on his feet...that knife was a Don Fogg piece and it brought high dollar to the auction. Nick Wheeler sharpened it up, and polished it out, so he contributed as well.

While your loyalty to your friends is admirable(truly), I could care less if you are pissed off or not. Ray and I frequently disagree, but I don't think I am less the friend for it, or for expressing my thoughts.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Very Nice Ray, great blade shape, great flow and great hamon. A typical Raymond Richards work of art.

Bill

all that other stuff aside, as usual this knife is a beaut!
Did I say that already?:)
