I have some inserted tooth saw blades,i talk to a Siamonds saw rep.he would not tell me the exact steel type but said it is comparable to 74NICr2.Can anyone tell me how to heat treat this steel, and also if it would be good for knives.
Thanks, Walter

Walter, If you have a Simonds 52" blade, most likely it's Good stuff. The last one I had spectographed came back as 1080+ 2% nickel.
Makes great blades, both stock removal and forged.
HT I use is take to non-magnetic, oil quench, temper 3 times 375-410degrees
depending on its intended use.
One blade is a LOT of steel:-) bruce

Thanks for the information Bruce. These are 56".I am going to try it and see how it works.

Thanks again,Walter

No problem
HT specs for L-6 are:
Austenitize at 1500F and soak for 10 min.
Oil quench in medium speed oil at 130F.
Temper at 400F for one hour; two to three times.
Should give Rc 60 final.
