Sawback knives

Carry a saw separately...lighter, better saw, and don't ruin a knife with useless sharp bits on the spine.

I was looking at buying the Al Mar fixed blade SERE Operator.
Some of the threads that I came across had members recommending this as a good tactical knife, actually specifying "saw-back" model.
I don't know if this is because it appears meaner or if there's validity to the saw function causing more damage to tissue... but at the end of the day I decided that I'll never use it for anything and I don't really like the look of it.
It disturbs the lines as far as I'm concerned, potentially snaggable as well, and I have yet to read of anyone singing praises over the half-ass saw function.
I'm no expert but it seems useless at best and detrimental at worst.

Do they put them on actual military knives, or on "military-style" knives?

The military M9 bayonet has a saw as does it's Russian counter part. They are more like a hack saw blades for cutting metal then wood but they work on wood as well.

I'm getting ready to test both head to head. I used the saw on the Russian model to saw through some chain link fence already. It did this very easy.

The cross-cut teeth on a Jefferson Spivey Sabertooth are more than adequate for sawing wood. I used it once on a dead joshua tree. The joshua is very fiberouse, and tring to chop it was futility, as the Sabertooth just kind of bounced off it without cutting it very much, but the saw back made short order out of that log.

The saw on the SOG Revolvers work well on wood....and if I remember right, the black blade Seal Revolver was included as part of the SOCOM's cold weather survival gear.

In some rare cases, yes. See my picture above of the Navy non-magnetic knife designed contracted for and purchased under exclusive government contract. This knife was never sold to the public it was only issued to UDT / EOD and some SEALS. It will easily cut steel chain.

in the second rambo movie when hes entering the VA camp he uses one of the serrations on the back of the knife to cut the chain, when i saw this in the movie i thought it was fake but since you said that it will cut steel chain i guess its real!

SOG SEAL REVOLVER

It is a knife and a saw...they rotate

The saw works awesome

...I also have an Imperial non-magnetic UDT/EOD knife which has a specification to be able to cut chain and it will, but it's not that great on wood.

Are you telling me that this knife can saw through steel chain? I guess that being non-magnetic it has to be made out of non-ferrous material, like titanium. I always thought that non-ferrous materials couldn't have higher RC rating than steel whithout being very britel... Amazing!
