Sawback or no sawback

This thread is mainly in regards to helping me decide which glock knife is better , the model 78 with no sawback or the 81 with a sawback. But I have always really wondered if a sawback knife has any real advantage or is just a nuciance in a common camping , fishing hiking situation ( fire starting / batoning/ skinning/cutting rope ) Whats your opinion

I think non saw back.....mainly because teeth can break of when batoning, also there's a good deal of light backpacking saws that will work better.

Just my $0.02, hope it helps!

Sawback teeth break during batonning? Thats a new one. You seen this haxppen?

I have seen sawback teeth brake from batoning but they were more of over grown serrations labed a saw back

Most fixed blade saw backs work fine for notching. Not so much for actually dropping saplings. My saw blade on my SAK works far better.

It is totally up to you, which do you prefer? Just don't expect too much performance from that saw back.

only pics, but like sog unit said they where more like over grown serrations....

Then ,respectfully, unless you have real first hand experience please refrain from posting "I saw pictures" experience.

It really adds nothing to the topic at hand.

Doesn't it? He's relaying info that he found that's pertinent to the conversation. Sure, a second hand experience should be taken with a grain of salt but then again so should first hand. This is the internet.

To the OP: Get it or don't. The worst case scenario is you chew up a baton more with the saw back. Personally though, I opt for a folding saw.

Pretty sure sawbacks in general compromise the durability of the knife. Also, if I recall, the Glock 81's spine is too thick for the sawback to be of much use. I've heard a lot of complaints about this.

You are quite correct this is the internet. I could easily claim to be Ray Mears, (but I am not). However when someone opines, then admits to no experience I give no credence to that claim what-so-ever. And only 50% to those who claim first hand knowledge.

I prefer to find out on my own....

Just out of curiosity, what in either of those Glocks makes them appropriate camping/hiking/fishing knife to you? They look like modified bayonets, made for stabbing. We could help you do a lot better at any price point. Get you something designed for outdoor recreation.

Man, get over yourself. It's a discussion board. When you discuss things with people in your day to day life do you ask those who voice an opinion (based on what they think, have seen, have read or whatever) to exclude themselves from your conversation?

You can take or leave what anyone says, and I can't speak for the op, but when I make a thread everyone is welcome to have their say. It would be a tad thin around here if only the experts were allowed to chime in.

Really, would you prefer an opinion from someone who has used that which you are asking about? Or those simply regurgitating something they have heard or read? As admitted?

Sure everyone is welcome to have their say, but maybe, just maybe they should know what they are talking about?

Or maybe I should fling my unfounded opinion on every style of knife in every sub forum on this board? I am sure that would go over well in the Busse, Reeves, Hinderer forums.

And by the way, I am by no means an expert on anything...Just a guy who has spent 35+ years playing in the woods. With knives with saw-backs, and those without.
