Can anyone describe in text or with a picture for that matter......
How the Sawby Self Lock works????
I have been playing around with folders again and as always, trying to come up with a "revolutionary" new locking mechanism!!!
Before I re-invent a patented "wheel" (come up with the same thing as the Sawby) I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how it works! I have never handled one of his knives.
Thanks,
Neil

am not completely sure...but has something to do with two parallel flats on the pivot pin, a spring behind the pivot pin...and a very short slot in the blade..which ends with a hole the size of the pivot pin.. the slot is the same width as the width at the two flats...that should give you enough to think about for a while...tom

Thanks Tom!

That's not what I came up with at all. I have knives to make and have put the folder thing on the back burner untill the end of January. I will get back into it then. I need my OWN locking mechanism and don't want to copy someone elses.
I can buy other knives to check out their locks but the Sawby is big$$$
Thanks
Neil

Neil,
You might want to spend some time looking at the patents on other knives before you get really serious and start making a prototype.I've read a few patents on knives and it seemed like the wording was kind of loose. They included blueprints also. I don't know which they go by more, the wording or the plans. But if you come up with something that closely resembles another lock the wording may keep you from using it.Good luck with it.It would be great to have a new locking mechanism.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

Matt,
You are right!!! At this point all I have a design. If I have time at work next week, I may work on a prototype. I have to make up one fist to see how it works......Then if it works good, I will worry about patents!!! It would take me less time to make a test knife than it would to research patents!!!!!

from what ive seen in the knife making world, you dont have to change much to get around a patent on a design....everyone steals everyone elses ideas...or do they share them? (i think not)
