Sawcut scales

I had a sawcut TC Barlow which I swapped for a Snakewood 47 Viper....

Sawcut Del Schrades
And this Case stocky....sawcut or not sawcut? That is the question...

There are a few of the Rough Rider sawcut knives on my shelf: a large toothpick, a trapper and a peanut. For a while, I was quite taken with the finish. I still like the look of the bone, but find the fluted bolsters overdone and gaudy. The toothpick, in particular, looks like a pimp’s knife.

I have also found that this finish takes on a tired and shopworn look in the pocket. It needs to be kept waxed and shined, and carried in a handkerchief or slip.

I will put up some pics if I can get some that look decent.

Different types of saws. Older cut bone used round saw blades as those were best for mechanical devices. Parallel lines indicate band saw blades and those are more modern and both easier to automate and safer.

But it's all intentionally added and I'd doubt those are actually band saw cuts. Made to look like it yes but not genuine. I mean, why would you need to make those tiny little cuts along the width with a band saw? If anything, you'd turn the bone lengthwise and push it through the bandsaw to trim it to rough thickness and that wouldn't leave those striations and surely not just on a portion of the material.

I see it as just another type of jigging. Regardless of the pattern, I like it, but I highly doubt it is genuinely "saw cut", especially in the sense of roughing in the material.

As do I. I’m not a fan generally, meaning there are exceptions. I much prefer a high degree of traction in a cover material for obvious reasons. For a collector piece it makes little difference.

I have a green 62032 medium Case jack with saw cut sides. Honestly, I tend to avoid saw cut sides, just not my cup of tea... I love the color of the 2019 Case's with Carribean blue sides, but just can't pull the trigger because of the sawcut sides.

Nice collection of Old Timers you have there. :)

I especially like the 6OT and 7OT (probably because I have those) and the 25OT, which is on my short list to obtain. :)
(I'll have to get the BTI made though. The pre-2004's I've found are way much exceedingly very far out side of my budget. :( )
