The pole of an axe is typicaly left pretty soft. Hitting it a lot with a hammer/sledge usually starts to "mushroom" the pole, as those of us who buy old axes have seen. Lots of splitting wedges end up in the same condition.
As for smaking the spine of a knife with a hammer,
