my neighbor gave me a piece of about 3 ft long sawmill blade she found in her barn, it the band type not the round one, the teeth on it are spaced about 1 1/2 apart don't know if it old, its also very flexible, do u guys think that would be good for a fillet knife? well several

3 ft long? Yep - that would fillet a BIG fish :)

A lot (but not all) old sawmill blades used L6 steel which is a very good blade steel. Is your blade L6? No way to tell. As long as it solid steel with no carbide tips, most likely it's a good blade steel.

Typically excellent steel for a thin blade. Hopefully our resident guru can fill you in on what it is, chemical makeup & how it will need to be treated.

Do you have the equipment to do a simple heat treat?
Torch, forge or something and some canola oil?

Not L6. Most (if not all) large band saw mill blades are 15n20. Good steel.

Most large circle saw mill blades are similar to L6, but are usually 8670.

makes sense josh before going thru all the work, how do i test, sorry for these dumb questions i just don't know

Cut off a small piece, heat it just past the point where a magnet won't stick, quench in 130f canola oil. If it's good for knife making you'll be able to file a small bit and then the file will skate like glass.

Don is correct on band saw blades - I was thinking "saw" as in circular, even though you did say "3 ft long? which should tell me a band saw blade. Still good steel, just use a small piece and heat treat as 15N20 - lots of info around for 15N20.
