I found a floor mounted jig saw today at a rummage sale, that looked like a VERY good deal. Is something like a "dewalt zigsaw" a useful or useless tool for the knifemaking shop?

Yep, I know, can't have too many tools, :D, but I am on a budget, and don't want to waste $ or floor space. Was looking for something to cut out handles, and if it would cut steel also that would be a plus.

It is called a scroll saw and mine is an of the upmost importance in my shop. Do you have pix?

Edit: make sure you get good blades, good blades are a must because of the tough materials used for knives. I personally recommend olson precision ground blades.

Sorry, no pic. Label on the stand said it was a dewalt "zigsaw". No blades, and seller didn't know much about it. Looked like it took a jigsaw blade. Price was $65, and if I was to guess, it looked like a heck of a good deal. Just have never used such a piece of equipment, and good deal or not, I don't want to spend $ on stuff that is not useful for what I need, ya know? It might be still there tomorrow.

I just cut everything with the metal saw, a wood bandsaw would be nice as well. I never liked using jigsaws, but it was just a personal preference. You can cut tighter with one, but I tend to cut outside my lines and grind to them anyhow.

I use a Delta 20 inch scroll saw in the shop occasionally for bone and horn. It performance good in tight areas. But most of the time I use one of my other tools in the shop like the 2x72 or 2x48 shaper. :)

Also, when it comes to cutting metal I prefer to utilize my bandsaw. Also would suggests using bimetal blades for cutting steel. Just my 2 cents and hope it will works out great for your shop.
