Well, after buying/selling somewhere north of over 500 knives in the past 5 years and still owning about 360 of them, I actually think that I have "enough" knives.

So, I have no plans to buy any more knives unless I consider them really "special" and, come 2023, I expect to sell at least 100 of the ones I've still got.

I did another 100+ knife purge (mostly on EB) a couple of years ago but those were mostly cheap Kershaw/CRKTs that I bought early and sold many in heavily discounted bulk lots.

The ones I sell next year will be much better/more expensive than those. If I can't sell them here , I'll sell them on eBay and I'll worry about the 1099 when I file my taxes in April 2024.

It's actually quite a relief to be no longer in search of the next acquisition. Now I can focus on spending/using my $ on/for other things.

LOL! ;)

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that........

Ok, really - what are you buying next? 🤣 🤣

Nope, believe it or not, I really mean it.

The pocket book is closed, except for something really rare or exceptional.

I've got everything else that I want now. I'll send you a copy of the inventory if you don't believe it.

And, if you've seen the pics of various parts of my collection that I've posted on BF, you'd know that I really don't "need" any more knives.

Laugh, if you like, but it's the truth and I guarantee that you won't be able to prove me "wrong" later.

I've made the same kind of statement myself once or thrice. Hope you have better luck than me.

Thanks!

Well, my "investment" in the knives currently in my collection exceeds $50K and the max resale value of the collection is around $75k.

If I can reduce the collection by about 100, I should NET around $20k. That's incentive enough to stop buying and start selling.

I'm pretty good at keeping my word to myself.

I feel ya. My collection is quite extensive, meaning too many knives for any reasonable person to own. I’m retiring at the end of the year so disposable income will decrease slightly. I’m sure some knife purchases will still happen but I will be concentrating on my vintage motorcycle collection for the most part.

I said something similar to myself about this time last year. Problem is, I didn’t tell the knife manufacturers what I had decided, and they kept coming out with super cool new models that I just had to have. 100+ purchases later and I think I’ll just be honest with myself this coming year.

Knife companies have to run out of new designs and new steels sooner or later right?

Just say, no (or, no more)!

This has worked in my life, more often than not, and I expect that it will work for me in this case too. ;)

Reported to mods for a hacked account!!

Friends and Family is already being commonly used, I think that the knife community will continue to buy and sell but just have to deal with trustworthy people or be more careful. It's such a dumb move by the government in my opinion, people will find a way around it until there is nothing left. Hell I can imagine people mailing money to each other to buy things before they would use goods and services after the tax law updates.

Getting rid of them can be as much a chore as collecting them to begin with.

Actually it's more of a chore to sell than buy knives, which is why I've put off selling any knives since I "binge sold" around 100 knives a couple years ago.

Apart from not wanting to buy any more knives (for now), once I get started selling knives I really won't have time to think about buying any.

Knife companies keep coming out with new and interesting designs. They have to do so to remain competitive and to sell more knives.

However, I've already got every kind/style of knife that I want and, as time has passed, I've come to know exactly what I like and don't like and, while I still look to see what's out there, nothing I've seen for quite a while has interested me enough to want to buy it because either it's too expensive and/or I've already got a knife like it.

So, that tells me that I have more than enough knives and that it's time to cull out the knives that I really don't want anymore.

I just need to get up the energy to start pulling them out, matching them to boxes/pouches if any and looking for all of the purchase receipts/docs for them before I take pics of them, decide on an asking price and then drafting/posting sales listings for them here and/or elsewhere.

It's a lot of work and I'm not looking forward to doing it but the $ I pull in for those I sell should be worth it in the end.

After that I need to sell more than a few guns that I don't need/use anymore which is even a bigger hassle because of the thin market and legal issues involved. That won't be any fun either, especially because I don't expect to net near the amount I'll net selling my knives.

After observing the way you collect, I'm curious to know if you are selling these knives to focus on collecting something else, or if this is a shift in your philosophy on collecting overall? Or perhaps you just decided it's time to let some go?
