Say it isn't so, Joe!

RE, the OP:

Well, that is a lot of knives. I imagine that most of them are potential "users", but too nice for using.

Have you considered evolving into a high-end collector of legendary makers? A Moran or Warenski for instance. Another might be Loveless. You can get there by setting aside whatever you would spend on just more knives and perhaps culling out a few more of what you still have. It will keep you in the game and could make for a nice inheritance for someone.

You can look on yourself as a curator or steward of fine collectable cutlery . . .keeping them to be eventually passed on, sold or otherwise, to another generation.

Well, after buying/selling somewhere north of over 500 knives in the past 5 years and still owning about 360 of them, I actually think that I have "enough" knives.

So, I have no plans to buy any more knives unless I consider them really "special" and, come 2023, I expect to sell at least 100 of the ones I've still got. I did another 100+ knife purge (mostly on EB) a couple of years ago but those were mostly cheap Kershaw/CRKTs that I bought early.

The ones I sell next year will be much better/more expensive than those. If I can't sell them here , I'll sell them on eBay and I'll worry about the 1099 when I file my taxes in April 2024.

It's actually quite a relief to be no longer in search of the next acquisition. Now I can focus on spending/using my $ on/for other things.

LOL! ;)
I've no doubt you're serious, and I'm sure you'll be successful. This departure is its own hobby in a way - more labor intensive, but requiring more focus. I hope you enjoy it and that you'll continue to participate in the various discussions. Best of luck!

After observing the way you collect, I'm curious to know if you are selling these knives to focus on collecting something else, or if this is a shift in your philosophy on collecting overall? Or perhaps you just decided it's time to let some go?

It will be a major consolidation & refinement of my collection.

I may use some of the proceeds to buy a few knives that are gaps in my collection that heretofore I considered too expensive but I have no intention of starting another major expansion of my collection.

Among the knives I would still consider buying are: a MUDD auto that I traded away for a bali of equal value at the time, a Szabofly and a Slyze Bowie .

Looking at around $2.5-3k just for those based on current pricing. Otherwise, there's nothing else left on my possible buy list.

But…did you see the new para 2 in cruwear and smooth g10?

😈 😉🙃

Nope but I'm not interested. ;)

The 4 knife Gen 1 (PE/PS), Gen 2 (PE) & Gen 3 (PE) Para Military black G10 set is all that I want/need. If I have the time, I'll post of pic of the set.

Never bothered collecting any Para 2 variations and have absolutely NO interest in doing so now.

Nope, believe it or not, I really mean it.

The pocket book is closed, except for something really rare or exceptional.

I've got everything else that I want now. I'll send you a copy of the inventory if you don't believe it.

And, if you've seen the pics of various parts of my collection that I've posted on BF, you'd know that I really don't "need" any more knives.

Laugh, if you like, but it's the truth and I guarantee that you won't be able to prove me "wrong" later.
Stick the flounce. I dare ya….

And maybe break a couple out and carry the things and use em.😆 Longest I’ve gone was 5 years, then I saw something that sucked me right back in.

Well, my "investment" in the knives currently in my collection exceeds $50K and the max resale value of the collection is around $75k.
Impressive! I’m curious: where do you see the best return? I’m assuming you’re not making money on every knife, so some brands/makers must be over-performing.

I have a few knives that I know I could sell for 1.25 or 1.5 times what I paid, but not many!

Friends and Family is already being commonly used, I think that the knife community will continue to buy and sell but just have to deal with trustworthy people or be more careful. It's such a dumb move by the government in my opinion, people will find a way around it until there is nothing left. Hell I can imagine people mailing money to each other to buy things before they would use goods and services after the tax law updates.
Yep, that is why I go above and beyond as a seller that way. Just sold a knife today, guy was naturally worried about FF, so I try to reassure that I am a normal person, I value my rep, I always give tracking, always give my email, and just ensure satisfaction. The dragon guy who was re-selling a knife after not returning the money of the guy who bought and returned it? You could tell from the way he was originally speaking to people that he was not patient and reasonable.

I like the fact that BF totally blasts thieves on here, their names and all for folks to see if googled. People do not take that lightly. I think that, also, helps people have faith in BF, the fact that they won't let you get away with it.

I have so far never had an issue paying FnF for over 13 Spydies on Reddit, and all my purchases here. It's a pretty good community, I find.

Bought most of the knives 3-4 years ago before the recent run up in used prices, which have been about 30-50% across the board.

I have only a few knives, like a Kershaw Tilt and a Halo V which (at least on paper) have increased by mulitples of what I paid for them but the average price that I paid for all of my knives is about $200.

So, if I sell 100 knives at about $200 each, I should net around $20k. Whether that represents any "profit" or just a return of capital, I can't tell you yet but I do not expect to show much if any profit when it's all said and done.

I'm not going anywhere. What I like about BF is that it's MORE than just a knife forum.

I've found niches in BF where I can cultivate my interest in cooking, TV/movies, music and Wordle while still keeping my ear to the ground about new and different developments in knives that will still pique my interest, even if I don't buy any more knives.

I'm glad to hear that. Your perspective is valued if not always appreciated. It's a much more valuable and useful arena when disparate views are expressed - especially those grounded in actual experience.

Hopefully you can walk away from buying anymore like you say sgt1372 sgt1372 but if your like me that itch will be back soon and you'll be browsing the exchange for your next last knife.

People are understanably sceptical but I really do not have any problem calling it "quits" when it comes to something that matters to me.

All of the knives that I use are kitchen or utility knives, of which I have many.

As for my knife collection, I never use any and, except for the autos & balis, they are all available to carry but there are only a select few that make it into my pocket.

Since I will still have so many knives, there will be no need for me to buy many (if any) more.

The same thing applies to guns, LPs/CDs, audio equipment, cars, books, artwork and sports collectibles -- each of which I have many and have no need or desire to buy many (if any) more.

I wish you well on the selling end of things. It can be a serious undertaking.

That is a lot of knives to take care of and cycle through. I'm up to somewhere around the 200 range and it's starting to eat up a bit of storage space; especially when I keep the boxes of the ones that aren't cheap utility knives. At some point something has to give, but selling that many can be a full time job.

I'm planning to tone it down a bit this year, to try buying only about a dozen or so knives, and apologize in advance to the owners of the local stores whose children I was putting through college. Of course this year I only planned to buy 24 knives and ended up buying twice that number
