Been heavily considering buying a Matriarch 2 for a backup blade, but I'm concerned about it being made in Japan, and also the blade being VG-10. Does anyone have one of these and/or have any experience with it?

I had the same concerns as you did gdog363. I have no problem with Spyderco's VG10, it stays sharp a good while, and has been very resistant to corrosion. The frn material is not to bad, not as nice as g10, but it works.

Just curious gdog, do you have any Spyderco knives??
If not, you really don't need to be concerned. They are an excellent company that stands behind their products and they make excellent knives.
Their VG10 is a good steel and will do anything you need it to. Their Japanese stuff is very good.

Performance wise, VG-10 runs in the same crowd as ATS-34, 154CM, and N690. I have several Spyderco VG-10 blades and am quite happy with the performance.

Some of my nicest knives were made in Japan. Very precise. Very fine fit and finish.

If you like the design, I think you will have no issues with the blade alloy or fit and finish.

Very good for a "disposable" knife.

Some of the best production knives in the world come out of Japan - Moki and Mcusta are just two of the companies whose quality and fit and finish are second to none.

I have the smaller model, the Lil' Matriarch, and its VG10 is indeed excellent at resisting sweat, humidity and corrosion.

Gets scary sharp and is pretty easy to sharpen and touch up, even in recurves and serrations, especially with the Sharpmaker

in the knife industry Japan is one of the highest quality and competitive industries in the world. Many of my favorite knives come from there.
