SCA fun thread...

You can't get away from stick-jocks anywhere can you. :D
Our local group is the "Silver Desert", far from everywhere else West.
Flieg is at every event out here. I asked that he bring his sword to my knighting for part of the ceremony. Baldric or Belt, same brotherhood.
I never was a squire... Lots of good friends and instructors though.
Tell your daughter to keep the spear work going, I prefer to use a "stick" glave as the most fun of all weapon forms. With the experimental smaller thrusting tips, I'm thinking of making a very light six foot thrusting-only Yari.
On the Khukri front, I'm waiting for the next big Foxie Folly to show, that looks like a KNIFE.
Dino

of course you said big Foxy Folly, around here that could be BIG...lol, where a 12" blade is considered small.

I took a quick look at your last post, and now when I get back it's a bit shorter :-)
My first two trips down to Aten were the Burro Creek wars. He he, getting charged by the Dwarves was always fun. The two "catbox" or "sandbox" wars that followed just were not as much fun to me for some reason. I think people from all sides brought more ego than pride to those... I still have a Kirby claymore (two handed) I bought at the second Burro Creek.
Here in the west we still have some of the "year one" and "before year one" people show up, it's nice to feel the connection to the start.
I have ordered new breast & back in the early 16th century Italian style. My 20 year old home made one seems to have shrunk over the years.
It also seems to be hotter in the helm these days.
I like the organic "leaf" look the F.F. has. I bet they are quick for the size too.
Dino/Vinnie

Yeah, the F.F. has an elvish appeal to me, and I hear it's one mother of a chopper.
Sounds like you'll be all set to really look the florentine part even on the field( sorry Calabrian, I was referring to florentine as a style only).

mark

I can use sword & shield, mass weapon & shield, pole arms, single sword (left or right), greatsword, bastard sword, even bastard hammer :-), but I suck at florentine heavy, unless I use a dagger, then I'm just not good. I can fence ok with two weapons, but even there I prefer one long weapon, left or right.
I picked the name as that's the region that my Dad's family came from. For court dress I like 1480 to 1580 Northern Italian. Swagger and flash what, hey Blackadder?.
I wonder if a cinquedea dagger with 3 then 2 then 1 fullers could be made if a wooden master was sent to H.I. Say with a 12" to 15" blade. I think the hard part would be to keep it as light as the historic ones.
I think the F.F. has the look of some of the older big khukris I have seen in photos.

Dino/Vinnie

The HI Kamis might make a little heavier version of the cinquedea that's for sure, these guys don't mess around, you may indeed cleave with these blades.
Remember back when the majority of the swords would bend or snap when you tested 'em on anything...

I have always enjoyed florentine and since the introduction of those wonderful basket hilts I can actually block incoming hits without trying to go to feast with bags of ice duct taped to my hands. But of course I ain't suicidal, in a shield wall I'm all sword and boiler plate kite...

:) your post in the gun thread made me laugh and also remember to include HRS in my master list of re-enacting interests...ping indeed...that's funny stuff. We sang alot of Lile Marlene...

I looked up cosplay online and found:

"The most specific anecdote about the origin of the word "cosplay" was that Nov Takahashi (from a Japanese studio called Studio Hard) coined the term "cosplay" as a contraction of the English-language words "costume play" while she was attending the 1984 Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon. He was so impressed by the hall and masquerade costuming there that he reported about it frequently in Japanese science fiction magazines. "

He He, I was there at Ratcon for three days, and was in a dam good Fett outfit (made by a friend who could not go) for all of Saturday. I remember several groups of Japanese fans who were taking photos of everybody in costume... I walked up behind one group and put my hands on their shoulders. A jump, a look, a jump back and then the the smiles. Lots of arm over shoulder photos and I got to be "Fett Sama" :D
I'd include a photo but have not paid my forum fee yet.
HUM, a pattern.
SCA
WWII
SF cons
Cowboy action shooting
A tux for dinner and a show
And in my youth, I was a Mod, not a hippie.
I guess I like clothing that is non-current.

I've never made it to Pensic, but in the wars out here I start with pike, shift to 7 1/2 foot cutting polearms, then to glave, then bastard hammer. I feel I need a caddy at times.
In WW the twice I do GI and pre side-change Italian.

"Huh?
Terry"

Just some blade lovin, stick bashing friends jawing away. The fact we have not met yet is not important. Jump on in.
The SCA is a world wide re-enacting (sort of) group that includes full contact, although with rules, weapon fighting. Weapons are based on rattan staffs and a one handed sword will weigh 1 1/2 to 3 lbs, unpadded. A great way to develop sword and heavy knife skills.
WWII is World War II... :D
Cosplay is COStumePLAY in Japanese slang, costume based events such as a science fiction or fantasy convention. By extension this could include a lot of hobbies.
Oh, I am still waiting for a foxy folly for the deal of the day. They look good.

Dino in Reno

Hi Terry, yeppers, what Dino said, just sharing some high adventures and goodtimes.
The re-enacting, has given me personally, wonderful little bits of space where time slows down a bit and I can experience funtimes with my Lady and my kids. and the opportunity and honour to meet some really nice people from all over.

Dino,
check out Dannys thread " Dui Chirra vs. Berkely Special" it has some enjoyable history on the pedigree of the Foxy Folly. Darn that is one good looking khukri, and the extra tools that can go with it are just the thing to whip out at a feast...cut yer beast m'lady?...clean yer ears?...

Hell, "Build you a summer lodge?"

Snow closed down I-80 for 12th night, and it may snow again for Cynagua investiture this weekend, and I on court. New clothing and no chance to wear it. I'll hope for the best and bring chains (for the road, not court).
Dino

Thanks for the link Terry, while I have read maybe 60% through the archives, I barely have a sense of where I may have read, what. And usually I'll get side tracked by a great post that gives me an idea for a new handle material,or different way to etch or bring out the wood grain in a handle...etc-you get the idea : )
One of my current projects is to re-handle the 18" CAK made by Santosh that my wife gifted me this last christmas with Yangdus help. The horn scale is ever so slightly separating, so I'm just waiting for a nice piece of Bocote to cut to size. To be honest, I doubt the handle would even fall off if I left it alone:D as I've been beating some10-13" dia. oak, maple and ash logs into shape for new fencing. Yeah, I know the mantra-pics-pics-pics...: )

Dino,
The jet stream is about to shift over the US,( or so the NOAH site on my palantir tells me...), so we may get about a 20 degree relief tomorrow through the weekend as that nice Pacific air mass pushes the Grendel wind back north. We have a snowshoe and smokepole hike this weekend and I'd rather have cold, packed snow than slush. I hope you can make it to court and don your finery, travel safe and definitely bring the chains. We'll hoist a birchbark flagon of good ale te ye' health and gettin' there safe.

mark in the woods, wearing a wolf fur vest( it's that cold today)

Terry, thank for the history. My taste seems to on as to the age of the base design. There is a saying with aircraft "looks good, flies good". I think that might be the case here. I would like A FF that is on the "light" side as most sword or dagger replicas I have handled run on the heavy side, no matter where they are made. Faster for those "28 days later" zombies too :-)

Mark, is it a muzzle stuffer or breach loader? The only BPs I have are Remington revolvers, I kept them because they can hit what I shoot at, unlike most CW colt copies I have tried. That and my 1865 Spencer carbine. My blushing bride bought me a center fire conversion breach breach-block for it :-)

Dino

Speaking of zombies, were the heck did those slow moving ones go?

Light khukris are fun, after I got the 18" CAK and chopped all day my WWII 17" seemed weightless, and the 18" Kobra was like air :)...

mark

Blushing bride for 18 years that is... :D
I said that she needed to be a bit more impulsive and do silly things at times. She said, "Well, I married you"... Our house of two has a smart one, a pretty one, and then there is me. ;)
She also got me a 12" Buntline SAA (Uberti) That thing is fun to shoot. At one cowboy action shoot there was a 35 or 40 yard target. Five for five, my only clean target.
Snowblower!? That's what kids are for:)
I almost bought an Uberti 18" cap and ball barrel on ebay a few years ago with that in mind. No time and I got out bid.
I think the last slow ones were in "Shawn of the Dead", loved that movie. Maybe we can get Bruce Campbell to do a classic zombie flick. Let's see, he is on vacation in the carib and is booked into this cheap hotel...
I think my best mid-sized zombie blade would be my straight 19" blade sword-kris from the early to mid 19th century. The two-handed claymore for larger packs of zombies.(do zombies have packs, herds? I have it, a MOB of zombies)

Dino

Dino,
I snagged a 22" FF a couple of years ago with a spring temper. It rings like a bell. Very fast like a sword. It is my favorite fighting weapon, even over my swords. I have a couple of smaller ones that are decent choppers. But, my M43 and BGRS get all the heavy chopping chores.
Slow zombies get my vote as well.
Terry

Thanks Terry, that's what I was hoping to hear from a FF owner. Unless you need to crush plate armor weapons need speed over total chopping power.
Yep, the classic slow zombies are the proper choice. But I do like the "more brains" groans of more recent zombies :-)
I will NOT be able to get over the hill, weather, car troubles and other things ganged up again.
I will be able to go to the ABS custom knife makers show here in town instead.
Oh well.

Dino

The fullers on the FF really make them flicker to life from the pics I've seen. Strength, speed and beauty. I really do like them too, torn between the FF,Manjushree and a larger Seax with a crown handle...
Gotta get the shop in better order first.

I hear that- with weather and cars, we play musical vehicles all winter. Just when the new calipers are on I notice the corroded gas line...blech...I don't mind so much in summer, but dang metal is cold now.
Weather closes one door and opens a window on a knife show..Lemons and lemonade: ) and you can etch with lemon juice...

We have a fun place just North of us where they have shootouts in an old west town facade as part of an older amusement park and the people that work there are into Cowboy Action Shooting, my sister-sons love to see it. Ever since I chatted with 'em I have had that sheepskin vest on my eventual project board. The one Clint wears as the man with no name. Until I researched it ,I never realized it is cut a bit shorter on the right so as not to snag has draw...cool man...

Well, tsf, enjoy your nice weather(hopefully) and Dino get more knives at the show: )
Good weekend to ye' n yern...
