Scabbards made using horn?

Namaste everyone,

I have seen scabbards made of wood covered with water buffalo leather and some with wood bound with brass. Is it possible to have a scabbard made with horn and inlaid with brass and silver?

Thanks for any advice you may have on this.

Harry

P.S. what other materials have been used for making good khukuri scabbards?

Kozak,

I just saw a khukuri offering today yesterday with a horn scabbard. Both the handle and the scabbard were horn inlaid with brass. It was nice, but a little on the small side. The khukuri was a very slender Dhankuta. Craig at GH was offering it, and you can find it under "Dhankutes." I hope this helps, even if it means that you find that you don't like horn scabbards.

Uncle, what is the proper way to spell Dhankuta? Is it with an "e" or an "a?" Or is there no standardized way of spelling in Nepali?

Harry.
I think HI Maccha Khukuri is having a Buffallo Horn Handle & Scabbard - while in it's scabbard it just looks like a beautiful sleek fish - when you pull it's tail it turn out to be a sturdy Khuk!

Yes Kozak, there are quite a few scabbards of horn and usually decorated with brass and white metal designs. I have never seen really old pieces in this style, nor with silver but have a few including one that is 17" overall.
The only scabbards I have encountered have been of leather covered wood, polished wood, bone and just leather.
Bill will hopefully comment as to some other possible rarities.

The horn scabbard khukuris are in every tourist shop in Nepal. Although attractive the scabbards are almost useless -- definitely not made for carry. I used to sell a few of these but disliked them so much myself I quit it.

HI will stick to wood and leather save for the Maccha and that model sells maybe 4 or 5 per year only.
