Can someone tell me the difference between the one blade knife, that Cumberland Knife Works Ebay store has for sale ($179),and the single blade model that Vintage knives has ($294.95)? They seem to be the same single blade stag handled Scagel repro,by Northwoods, buy there is about a $100 difference.
Thanks in advance for any and all info...

They are the same knife. I'd say it is a difficult call but I have several of those Northwoods Scagel reproductions and there is a wide variance in the stag on them. If Vintage has one with exceptional stag it may be the difference in price. Ask to see detailed pics of the exact knife you will be getting or if they have more than one ask to see all of them and pic the one you think is the best of them. Typically the best stag models are going to have higher asking prices.

STR, I got you,let me ask a second question to you...
On the varied stag on your knives, was the price less, for you, on the lesser nice stag?
And,on the lesser nice stag, are you happy with it?
This is what is nice about being able to walk into a knife store, and see them.
No such store in my area...
Thanks,
Vince

I guess what I'm trying to say,is that ,how bad can the stag be,on the $179 knife, when you have $115 more in your pocket,AND basically the same knife. After all these are production knives, are'nt they?
Help me justify this....

One thing about Bill Horn at Cumberland Knifeworks, he'll check it for you and if you describe what you like, he'll pick out the one he thinks you'd pick out for yourself. Some people like highly figured "popcorn" style stag, others (like me) like thick smoother stag, then others don't much care but they want the scales to match.

I bought my two blade Northwoods Scagel from Bill, and it's one of the nicest ones I've seen, and I got it for $189 (I'm including a picture of each side). For my money I'd go with Bill due to the price difference. That being said I've also dealt with Vintage Knives, and they are top of the line and very professional, and I'm sure they won't disappoint you.

Either way, you've got to get the Scagel! :D

You HAD to show me the two blade bolstered model, huh, longbeachguy? LOL!
No really, that is a nice one.I was tossing the idea of the single blade ,cause I don't like 'em too thick.

You could always ask PJ Tomes to make you one.:D I lifted this picture from his website. A genuine Scagel on top and PJ's interpretation on the bottom.

Here's a couple of shots of the Northwoods Scagel #3 I picked up recently.

1095 steel and sambar stag...gotta love it. :)

I like it a lot, except a couple of the pins securing the stag are sticking up a bit more than I would prefer. I am going to contact Northwoods Knives and see if they can adjust it for me if I send it to them.

That's my favorite model, of all the Scagel repros! I have one I carry, and two safe queens  ! Wouldn't want to run out of 'em  !

The two blade bolstered one is huge compared to my favorite one which is the first one that was the much smaller two blade model in the middle of my pic here. You can see the big bolstered one side by side it. These are super knives but for carry I use one of the ones my very good friend did for me. He took one of the two blade first two blade ones and several of the two blade bolstered ones and turned them into thinner single blade models which I just love. Its the top knife in this pic. I carry this one quite a bit. Its a nice wide blade that still slices well. I like all that blade thickness for push cuts because the blade doesn't cut into my thumb so bad from whittling, which is something I do quite a bit these days. You can see more of these big ones Dirk did for me here at this link to the home page in my profile. These are wonderful folders. I think he still has one for sale but not sure. I have like four of these from him. http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/showforum.php?fid/41/

Just look for Scagel and click those.

As to the stag I do not have any issues with the ones I have as all are quite beautiful. I've seen lesser quality ones and handled some that guys got when new. To my knowledge they paid full price but it was still a song compared to what they are actually going for now. The dealers I've spoken with at shows were pricing them higher for the ones they deemed excetional. By exceptional I mean one of two things. The knife can have two scales that are pretty much flawless, pretty even in thickness all around and stunning to look at. Some can have an exceptional scale on one side and a so so one on the other. Stag is like that. Its very subjective as far as what is better and what is not. I tend to like the ones that have thinner even thickness scales on both sides, and where both look great but thats not too often when it comes to stag.

For what its worth. I got mine direct from John Cable which in my opinion is who you should contact to see if he has anymore. He is like in possession of the finests 'first pics' from the entire inventory and got his own hand picked ones. Go visit the web site where he hangs out and get in touch with him.

Man, I gotta thank all you guys for the info you all put up here for me!
Thanks Guys!!!!

sunburst,
Nice knives and pics. That bolstered single blade is sweet. Is that the newest model in that repro series?

Nice bunch sunburst! Dave Shirley has promised limited production, and he's a trustworthy guy, IMO! They should at least keep their value.
I have a few of those; I should get them on here!!

Hey Fewpop,

Yes that is the #8 Barlow/English Jack that recently came out. They also made some in Bone & Ivory that are out of this world...

Thanks,

Sunburst

When the Scagel repros came out, I liked the ethics of the release! Dave Shirley had to defend the Scagel copyright in court, and promised to keep the runs small to preserve their value. Having owned most models of the originals himself, these repros are a tribute to the great man some call the father of custom handmade cutlery. I've been lucky enough to get a few unusual ones as well.

At top is the first knife released, a nice small stag 2-blade. Unofficial count, there are 134 regular ones in existence, plus a few altered by Oupa, and plus 4 presentation samples in Ironwood for a total of 143. The second knife is one of those 4 Ironwood examples.
The 3rd one is a 1-blade made from leftover parts, I think. I begged it off a Michigan dealer!! Its proportions are great for an EDC, like a small sodbuster!
Next is the 3rd knife released, the second folder. There was one of those strange non-folding knives in between (Heh-heh)! I like this one-blade too, enough to carry one: not this one, but one with equally nice stag.
Finally, the 4th release (3rd folder) a massive 2-blade.
All carbon steel and natural handle materials, favored by the man himself, William Scagel!

Wow waynorth I am blown away once again (It seems I say that a bunch around here)...Just when I feel smart and think I know a little about something you throw in a 1 of 4 presentation sample in Ironwood... that I have never even heard of and am reminded to stop, look and listen and speak only when spoken to...This way maybe I will learn something in the process :p :D Thanks..

I'm all ears...:D

A very fine collection of reproduction Scagels, very nice indeed..Please don't stop there I know you have those drool causing Ivory handled beauties somewhere waiting to be shared...

Thanks,

Sunburst

That is an awesome collection Waynorth.

Until you handle one, you can't really get the "feel" for just how solid those knives are. When I saw your pictures i had to go dig mine out just to compare and remember.

A quick question (if you don't mind) what does the "1 of 200" mean on the box? Does that mean that it is the the first of that model run, or that there are only 200 models of Scagel repros that are going to be made?
