Back in June at the Blade Show, Gus and I had an opportunity to visit with our good friend Ray Kirk, ABS master smith.
I asked Ray if he had any of his Scagel style folders with him but the only one he had was his own personal carry.
So, I just asked Ray to put me on his list and send me one when he had the chance. Gus, never one to miss an opportunity told Ray he'd like one as well.
Well, today my new folder arrived.
It is 4" closed, features a blade of forged 52100 and Sambar stag scales. Liners are titanium and back spring is 4352 (a medium carbon alloy).
Accompanying the knife is a very nice certificate of authenticity giving information about the knife and the pattern. It also includes an image of the completed knife.
Anybody who knows Ray or has owned any of his knives knows that he knows sharp and this knife is no exception. The blade is well centered, spring tension is just right and walks and talks just like it should. I think old man Scagel himself would be proud.
Ray's forged knives (folders and fixed blades) represent some of the best values in the custom knife world in my humble opinion. Add to that the value of Ray's friendship of several years and the kind of man he is and the end result is priceless.
I'm pleased.
Here are a few hastily gathered images for your enjoyment:
