Hi James!

Actually, it's my boss. He's done so much for me over the past 8 years that I wanted to do something nice for him.
I hope he likes it!

Brett

Oh man. i got my Ray Kirk scagel today. it's really an amazing knife. Tight, solid lockup, just a really nice knife. I might have a hard time letting this one go.

:)

Mine dropped in yesterday.

Ray has put a lot of thought as well as effort into this knife. As bdws and Blues have stated the knife is just right tight for me. Great action.

That hole is not for thumbing the blade open, it is for grasping the blade to open it with thumb and an opposing finger. Ray has radiused the hole ever so slightly to enable the grip without a sharp corner. The liners have also been relieved for the blade tang. Fit and finish is superb.

This is one of the best bang for the buck knives I have picked up in a while, but that is a given with all of Ray's knives.

Ray and I spoke last evening and he mentioned that he picked up quite a few pointers from Bill Ruple at the Spirit of Steel Show. Seems like most times I see someone getting started with slip joints I hear Tony's or Bill's name mentioned. :D.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. The knife is very, very sharp. ;)

Great pics! I have a Stag one on order so this is fun to see. I had a Mammoth scaled version and I want to confirm what the others have been saying ... an excellent knife at an amazing price.

The waiting game continues ....

Ray - had no idea you were doing folders - awesome!

Will have to pay a visit again soon...

Congrats to all the new folder-owners...those are sweet!

Daniel,
I had picked up a pattern of the Scagel folder at the last Scagel hammer in at Ravenna, MI from Jerry Van???. I made some and then went back to straight blades. I accumulated a few orders for them and have finally gotten a chance to work on them for a while. I carry one all the time and hope to get a few extra made for some shows coming up.
Come by any time, you know your welcome, bring Krien if he can get lose for a while. Seems like you guys work ALL the time. :)

Any chance one of you happy owners can shoot some back strap and trough views for the reverse engineer in me?

.....In fact seeing this thread prompted me to make it my carry knife today.....
Me too, STR. Blues has inspired Kirk "Scagel" owners all over the country to give their knives some more pocket time. :D

Ray,

Yup, I would suggest that you have some available at the shows you attend when you can.

The pattern is published by Jerry VanEizenga of Nunica, MI. I believe his pattern is the traditional 5 pin. It appears that Ray Kirk has modified it with Ti liners (instead of steel) and screwed on scales.

Thanks brownshoe...that helped a lot. There's a "how to" book available on Ebay

Jerry VanEinzga also has a how-to on the Scagel folder. I got the O1 pattern and his autographed papers on how to do it. I still read and learn from it. Jerry is a very nice person to talk to and visit with. He always has some information that you may need or a solution to your knife problems. I always enjoyed my time with him.

I just got one of Ray's Scagel style folders the other day, and I couldn't be more pleased. In fact, I told him I was gonna post here and brag on him, but Blues and everyone else have said everything I was gonna say, so... I will say this, though - Ray Kirk is a true gentleman, and I would order another knife from him in a heartbeat. He does great work for a very reasonable price, and he's extremely responsive to questions. Thanks a lot, Ray.

My knife is almost the twin of Blues', and I do want to echo the comment about the backspring. After I got the knife and was admiring it, my wife asked to look at it; when she tried to open it, however, she couldn't. She could get my Vintage Knives moose open (and thanks again, Charlie), but Ray's Scagel style was beyond her.

Ray sent it in a little pouch, but I went ahead and made my own. I intend to make it an EDC knife, but given how pretty it is and how paranoid I am about losing it, I put together a pouch that looks a bit like one of Ron Ryder's buckaroo pouches. The main difference is that I braided the keeper, but since I haven't figured out how to back-braid four strands yet, I just finished it off with a turk's head knot and wrap the end around my belt twice with the knot at the bottom. Oh, and the other important difference is that Ron is a real craftsman, and I was just making it up as I went along.
