Scale spacers

Been looking at Janz and texas knife at their scale spacer sheets.

Id like to try some to add thickness to the handle

I see different thicknesses .020, 030. 039

Looks like hard plastic even thinner , and vulcanized, I guess that is a rubber material that cushiony rather than hard plastic

What do you guys like to use?

The vulcanized stuff, do you cut to fit exact with a razor blade or scissors? Rather than sanding the edge to contour to the tang?

What else works good for spacers? I saw someone that used plumbers gasket(maybe the same stuff as the vulcanized sheets?)

I measured a 20 rd reload ammo box plastic its .070. I could cut one of those up if I wanted

I know some people use DVD cases, or notebook covers for liners. I personally have never made any.

I've used DVD/CD/XBox cases, and dollar store cutting boards for liners. Worked great. Tried a plastic milk container but it wasn't as white as I hoped. I think someone here used plastic from a Tide pod container to get orange ones; might have to try that one day. Just trace the handle on the plastic, cut around it, then put them on and trim with a razor.

Any thin plastic will do.

In addition to those already listed - cheapo file folders, cutting mats, place mats, and shoe boxes. Many of these also come in colors.

Thin layers let you build the exact thickness you desire. Then simply glue them together.

The important part is then getting the correct length hardware (bolts & nuts) can anyone offer the OP advice on a suggested length. I haven't done any, but would also be interested.

I think there was a similar post a while back.

I made my spacers from a DVD case: "Host your Mexican Party!"

I traced around the handle and cut with scissors. Then I bolted just the handle scales and spacers together and used a file to bring it to shape. Then some sandpaper to smooth everything out. Bolt scales and liners onto the blade.

As for the bolts: The stock hardware still fit with the spacers - the top of the nut and the bottom of the bolt came flush. However, when I switched to stainless bolts, I saw these Dome Cap nuts. I got the next longer bolt and then capped 'em!

I really like the way it fills my hand now. Cheap, good looking, functional.

One last thing - my factory sheath did not accommodate the new fatter handle. I had a shoe repairman resize so I can snap her into place.

LOL, yes and our guests promptly dispatched the music. They didn't mind the Tequila and Tacos however!

And thanks about the knife looking good - I got the idea from a Beckerhead that named his "The Skunk" - I just took the fit and finish to a slightly higher level.

This is the tide pod container liners...

These days I pretty much only use Rubbermaid utensil drawer organizers from the thrift store. For .25-.50cents each you can make several sets and they're abundant in many colors. My favorite are avacado green and that dirty dark yellow. Still searching for that burnt orange lol

I use the cap nuts too...home depot has shorter ones, Lowes are taller and stick up too much.

I get my spacers from the $-Tree as when they get through with there plastic Box Containers they just throw them away and I talked them into donating them to me when I need another pair of spacer's or so ~~ plus they come in different colors most of the time and what I don't use I donate to several different places and people.! Nothing goes to waste.!***

NCSlice,

That's some superb craftsmanship on the handles and those spacers look fine. Very nice. That 9 sure looks like it was customized like no other I've seen.

I find that type of plastic turns white where you slice it. That's why I use something more flexible like Rubbermaid stuff

Thanks! I just used small round files to make those marks. I went for a fang effect that didnt really turn out
