Last week, I did a 3 days camp and hike which covered 18miles (30km) of secondary forest and boulders to reach the top of Mt Apo, the highest peak in the The Philippines.

This trip truly put myself and my gears to the test. It was raining daily and we had to hike through slippery mud and boulders daily for 8-10hr. I am fortunate to complete it safely to tell the tale.

DEK on the peak of Mt Apo. D3V rust resistance is truly impressive. It rained everyday and the sheath was totally wet on my hip during my hikes. Not a single rust at all.

Enjoying a nice cup of warm coffee in the chilly morning. This is Lake Venado where I camped on the 2nd day.

My trusty Leki that saved me from many falls and didn’t failed on me. Many poles bent during this adventure.

Hey Don, looks like a great adventure. Thanks for sharing. I’m planning to go to the Philippines in June with my wife and kids, but I don’t think I’ll be doing any hiking as strenuous as that! 🍻 :)
Gus, if you have the time, I will recommend Mt Pulag at the north of Manila for family with kids. It’s 2 days hike which requires you to sleep over in a tent. This is a much manageable hike for families and you will be rewarded with a beautiful sea of cloud if the weather is good. I did it 4 years ago with a family with a 8yo boy too.

Great write-up and photos Don. I am glad that the equipment you took on the trip helped keep you safe. Thanks for sharing the story.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful trip Don. Your quality gear shows your experience, especially in those conditions 👍
I took a lot of gears with me. I have one of the heaviest pack. It was raining a lot before my climb so landslides were my concern. Fortunately, we have porters to help to carry some of my gears. I packed basic survival gears like compass, fire steel, water filter, space blanket, bankline, extra clothes and down jacket in my backpack. And 2 knives of cos. Most people just carry water to hike in my group. Maybe I worry too much but you never know.
