I think I may quit buying wood scales and buy blocks, then cut them on the table saw to make scales. Most scales are not perfectly flat and I usually have trouble with getting them good and flat. If I cut the blocks on the table saw, I usually can get them to where I do not have to grind them to get them flat.

I use both scales and blocks if i need to cut a block for scales i use my disc grinder to true them blocks are not always true on the shiny side.

I mainly buy blocks or larger blocks and cut scales when I need them. These days I true everything with a carbide router bit in my mini-mill.

Yup you can always make scale from blocks but it's really hard to make blocks from scales. I always cut blocks and then if I need the scales cut them from that.

I use a wide blade on my bandsaw to cut scales because it has a thinner kerf and it has a larger cutting capacity.
