OK...The customer's first purchase from my site for the most expensive thing up there plus overnight shipping?

So I sent the following email to see what kind of reply I would get:

-----------------------
Hi there,

There are a few things about this order that I need to clear up before I can ship the product.

1. The Billing name and address are entirely different than the shipping name and address.

2. This email does not appear to match either name listed, nor does it match the email given on the recording for "Hollye Green" at the phone number entered.

3. I called the number listed and was unable to leave a message for "Hollye Green."

4. The ISP used when placing this order is in the UK.

With this kind of disjointed information I am inclined to deny this order.

Also, it is our policy to only ship to the BILL TO address on a first order.

I would appreciate hearing from you ASAP on this matter.

Regards,

-Duane.

Imagine my surprise when I got the following reply:

From "Robin Root Robin Root" robinroot@terra.com

Iam Hollye Green
1. I am on holiday in UK for that reason I have UK ISP.
2. This purchase is a gift for a friend, for that reason the directions are different.
3. The telephone to that you flames do not respond because at the moment there is nobody.
4. You can call to my bank company or VISA and check my information.
5. My credit card has been approved and charger.

I hope that the order will sent the first bussines day.

Thanks, Hollye Green.

Note that I never got this person’s bank or VISA information…besides, they used a Discover card.

So I got several of these...

Strage to say but I hope Mr. Green really IS a scam because otherwise he is experiencing the same sting that I felt trying to (legitimately) do similar transactions earlier this year. I was living in Virigina but spending a lot of time in Ottawa, Canada. When I ordered things I was calling from a Canadian ISP, using my American Credit card, and trying to get things shipped either to my Canadian address or to my US post office box near the border. It is to your credit that you at least gave Mr. Green a chance to verify his information. As I found out, a lot of companies just ignore "suspicious" orders. For future reference, is there any information or proof that Mr. Green could have provided that would have helped? In my case I got my US shipping address added to one credit card account but it seems the business owner has to go out of their way to call the credit card company to verify the "alternate" address.

Good catch Dwayne, sorry to hear that someone tried to scam ya, but in your case, 'good eye'... ;)

Best of luck with the new endevour too!

Mel

Rev. Pete, I called the number listed, and there was a female voice on the recording, saying “Hi this is Hollye Green, blah, blah, please leave a message.” This was in perfect English. The emails I received, from a Spanish language host (I went to terra.com) is not the same person. I understand wanting things shipped to alternative addresses, and I do it all the time for my regular customers. I put myself on the other end and provide the services I would like if it were me.
If this was not such a mess, and the alternate shipping address was for Hollye Green at Joe Mama’s Deli, 1313 Mockingbird Lane, in Denton, TX, I would have not thought much of it, but this one is just too weird.

Furthermore, my phone number is listed on every email I send out. If I wanted this item, and wanted to straighten things out, I would be making phone calls, talking to the vendor, from wherever I was…a little more communication than “Has been shipped my order?”

It takes a fair amount of time to chase down this crap, and it’s not even a lost sale...I'm just glad it wasn't a lost knife.

Thanks Mel.

I would have, but the answering system did not take a message.
I did notify Discover as well as my service...I also waited to reverse the charge until the banks were aware of the situation.
