Unfortunately, it appears that the once legitimate account of "ohiojerry" was hacked and the miscreant who did so has taken several of our members for a chunk of change by offering to sell CPKs and Busses.

Folks, if the deal appears to be too good to be true...it probably is.

If you are going to take a chance, make sure you are satisfied with the "proof" you request and receive to verify that the individual has the knife or item you are attempting to purchase. Nothing is certain, but the odds are better when you have more info than just the hope for a good deal.

This has been a bad day for some of our friends. I can only hope that some of them can recoup their losses.

(The account has been banned.)

Just something I noticed, I can’t view it anymore because he was banned but his latest positive feedback was on February 20th by a member with 5 feedback scores. Before that was way back in 2019. I’m wondering when exactly the account got hacked, could be a possibility of false recent positive feedback to gain trust? I forgot what the deal thread was or the name of the member who posted the feedback.

There is nothing to indicate any malfeasance or reason to question that (other) member's integrity. I've already been over the records.

The primary indication that someone was a scammer was the various backgrounds they used for the knives they were offering - it shouldn't be too hard to identify.
Edit:
Another thing I want to mention is that as a buyer using PayPal FF, why not ask a few questions before sending over your money ? For example, you can always check who made the sheath if it was for a busse knife. This could be a real challenge if the guy wasn’t a knife nerd or he is a scammer after all.
Again, it’s inevitable if the guy is with the knife but choose to take your money without sending the item.

Do we know anything about how accounts are getting hacked?

Just using a common password that was compromised elseware?
I don't know the answer to this however it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility they scrape data from breaches and just run scripts to try the email and password combinations everywhere. A knife forum seems awfully specific to then post bunk for sale ads though. I'm wondering if members here are getting phished off comments on YouTube knife videos.

https://haveibeenpwned.com/ is a good resource to see if your email or phone numbers have been involved in security breaches

I received this email today from the PayPal email I sent money to. It seems he wants me to report the transaction on PayPal so he can refund me?

I’m skeptical because he shouldn’t need me to report it to refund me, also if PayPal decides it wasn’t fraud then their decision is final and it goes through completely?

Posting Incase anyone else got the same email.

He really wants me to report the transaction. Probably so PayPal can say it’s a valid charge and release the funds to him. Also I’m pretty sure you can report a transaction even if it’s refunded.

I cannot express strongly enough how much this sets off my scam alarms. Everything about the message screams "don't do what he's asking."

Angry scammer alert

Something is really telling me “don’t report it”. He knows PayPal will side with him and give him the funds.

I hope others don’t fall for this. If you paid with credit go directly to your bank. How he desperately wants me to report it is very fishy. Just going to wait for my bank to contact me before I report or file anything else.

Called PayPal directly, The lady was really nice and assured me the funds would be returned. She set up a claim while on the phone noting that the account was hacked and the IP address was not the trusted IP (probably because the guy tried locking my out of my account from wherever he is) , so hopefully it gets reversed.

NOT hilarious! Total bullshit!!! Damn scammers. 🤬 :poop:  I can practically guarantee they're reading the threads about their antics here and laughing. Hey bozo, go suck on an exhaust pipe!!! 🤌🖕
You’re right, I didn’t mean it literally, but here’s an update.. PayPal didn’t do squat. Transaction still valid even though they can see attempted logins on my account from overseas.

Now it’s up to the bank to ask PayPal for the funds back.

It’s hard to tell which is worse, PayPal or the scammer..

Ouch. 🤬 Keep asking for management/supervisors until you get some actual help? Threaten to get an attorney? 🤷‍♂️
