A previously reported scammer using the email address: davemated7@gmail.com attempted to hijack a sale from a user attempting to make a purchase from me on 09-11-2024. The scammer altered their email display name to match my BF handle trying to lend legitimacy to the request.

The buyer is a Gold Member and did not use his email address in the sale thread or the DM he sent to me.

The scammer sent the following email to the buyer:

Hello brother,
Consider it yours. $350 shipped. PayPal info is; keenandark90@gmail.com

Send via friends and family/no notes. Please provide your shipping address at your earliest convenience.
Thanks

The good news is that the buyer did not fall for it, waited until I confirmed that it was not me making the request, and the scam failed.

Although I cannot confirm, the buyer must have had his email address exposed in some public space somewhere on BladeFourms, and the scammer located that information and made the attempt.

davemated7@gmail.com also tried to scam me, and several alerts have been made about this email scammer.

This guy checks for your previous posts and looks for an email to scam you with. A thorough cleaning of their posts should be in order for every buyer.

I know it won't happen, but making the exchange private would eliminate a lot of this. A perk for paying members.

It's been brought up and the idea did not pass muster with Spark.

I don’t know if it would help much. Spend $10 and make a few hundred off of one transaction. Seems like easy math to me 🤷‍♂️ Sadly plenty of paying members have been got.

I wish there was a perfect solution. I guess the best advice is to not post your email publicly, don’t reply to unsolicited emails and pay with goods and service.

Good point. Surprising how many paying members are still not using DMs after all of these incidents.

Or better yet, why is anyone using PP F&F at all on this forum? The vast majority of people getting scammed are using PP F&F, yet the only possible solution being thrown around is "become a paying member so you can DM", oh and this "make the exchange only for paying members" theory which just got blown out of the water.

Just wondering: How many people on here who've gotten scammed are paying members? I'm guessing the majority.

How many people on here using Postal Money Orders have been scammed? My guess is probably a few, but nowhere what people using PP & FF have been.

I want to thank Spark Spark for being smart enough to not make the Exchange only for paying members. Seriously.

That being said, it would be interesting if he did do it, purely as an experiment, just to see if it really would make a difference in the number of people being scammed. I doubt it would make much difference, but it would be interesting to see how it would work.

The vast majority of folks scammed, that I have had to deal with personally, are not paying members and had no access to PM / DMs. Period.

The other group are the ones who fall prey to hacked accounts and deals which were clearly too good to be true, but which they found to be irresistible.

It is not difficult to create a complex password. It is not difficult to pony up $10 to have access to private messages when one spends hundreds of dollars or more on knife purchases.

It is not difficult to do one's due diligence and homework in making a purchase with an unknown party.

We can only do so much. What we can't do is protect people from themselves.
