Scammed on Ebay?

I received the mail below from Ebay this evening. Doesn't look good, and I've already sent payment via USPS Money Order.

I've never had a problem with internet transactions before, but there's always a first time. Does anyone know an Ebayer with the ID Brewersfan917? The ID supposedly belongs to a guy in Two Rivers, WI (anyone local to that area wanna lend a hand?)

I've sent a less-than cordial message asking him for my knife or my money, but since he hasn't responded to the first two email I sent I have my doubts about getting a response to the third. I indicated that without either a knife or a refund by Friday the 8th, I'd be filing charges with the Post Office and his local Law Enforcement folks on Monday the 11th.

Any other suggestions or words of wisdom?

Thanks!

Dear Harold G. Jones,

The following is a notice from eBay Trust & Safety regarding:

Item Number - 7144864592
Item Title - TOPS Anaconda Knife - 15.25" overall

Our records show that you placed a bid on this item. We removed this item from the Site and cancelled your bid because it appears that the seller's account has been compromised and used by an unauthorized third party. The seller's privileges to trade on eBay may be temporarily suspended while we investigate this matter further. Due to privacy concerns we will not be able to share further details related to this seller.

If someone claiming to be the seller asks you to complete a transaction outside of eBay, we strongly recommend that you ignore the request. Transactions for items listed on eBay that are completed outside of the eBay marketplace are not covered by the Buyer Protection services offered by eBay and can be highly indicative of fraud.

If you have already paid, you may wish to pursue recuperating your funds. Some steps you might take include:

1. Ask the seller for a refund
2. If you paid by check, ask your bank to stop payment
3. If you paid by credit card, contact your credit card company’s security department
4. If you have made a payment by money order or wire transfer, you may contact that company for further information at 1-800-325-6000 (Western Union), or at 1-800-926-9400 (Money Gram)
5. If you paid with PayPal, review the Buyer Complaint Process at:

There are many tips on how to protect yourself with any Internet transaction in the eBay Security & Resolution Center located at:

Our goal is to ensure that your eBay experience is safe so that you can buy confidently. It is rare that something goes wrong with a transaction on eBay, but we're here to help you protect yourself in the event it does. If you have additional questions, please send us an email using the "Contact Us" link found on eBay Help pages. Do not respond to this email, as your reply will not be received.

Hustle down to the post office in the morning and stop payment on that money order! I forget what it costs but it's reasonable (unlike the fee banks charge to stop payment on a check).

Yes,This is the best advice.Stop payment on the money order before he cashes it in.

The email he received may be a fraudulent attempt to gain his PP log-in info, the link in the email takes you to a PP page, but, it could be a fake, to file the claim, you have to login, don't EVER login, from a link in an email, even if it seems like the Email is legit!

I have dealt with all kinds of emails from scammers claiming to be from eBay and Paypal, and now eBay has shut down my account due to it being hacked, I'm just done with eBay, safer to hawk my stuff at a flea market as far as I'm concerned.

Your problem is as you claim..."I have dealt with"....even when eBay says this is illegal, and will be treated hostile. You'll get no sympathy from doing the wrong thing. You need to report anyone who approaches you "off eBay" and delete them as junk mail. We may all make mistakes...but some learn from them and become wiser. Have you stopped dating women, because you've had a few "bad" dates??
You have to deal wisely when making any deal...even ones done hand to hand fill the Courts. Have you really sold at a Flea Market?? You may wish you were back on eBay..!
There is a ton of information and advice on good and safe dealing on eBay. If you aren't too lazy to learn..you can be well prepared and protected. If you wish to just learn as you go...then be prepared to learn the bad with the good.
All business has profit and losses. Some businessmen learn and do well...others don't learn and fail. What Rainmaker is going through could happen to anyone...I'm sure he will find success somehow..and I wish him luck.
Ebay has a forum for you to seek advice...and there are long standing members who will have the advice and support you need. Go there ASAP and they will be able to give more direction.

I've brought all of the suspicious emails from eBay and Paypal to their attention. Yes I have sold at flea markets. I'm not trying to run a business, I'm just trying to get some extra cash to buy some knives, books, dvds and cds.

The PO told me there was no stopping a Money Order once issued, and directed me to the Postal Inspector's office.

Ebay was absolutely no help at all (go figure.)

I had already sent the "seller" an email threatening him with charges (local and via PO) if I didn't have either the knife or my money back by Friday, April 8. Friday came and went, so I prepared myself to start the process this week.

Lo and behold... on Monday, my money order was returned with a FORM LETTER from the seller. He said that his account had been hijacked, items he wasn't aware of were listed for sale under his ID, Ebay had suspended his account and "instructed" him to return all the money he'd been sent.

So I have my money back, and all's well that ends well... but does anyone besides me smell the fragrant aroma of BullSh*t here??

I'm confused. If his account was hijacked by some crook how did he get your money order?

THAT would be the fragrant odor I was referring to..... and that's probably why they suspended his account.

The seller did something wrong and eBay caught him.

Yes. He was selling two (2) Anacondas, neither of which brought more than $102.50. MY thought is that he either: A) Never had either knife, and somebody bitched him before I caught on; or B) He wasn't willing to sell them that cheaply, the other buyer bitched first, and Ebay suspended his account as a result. Either way, the guy wasn't on the level.

The form letter I got was the kicker for me: "Dear Ebay User...." :barf:

What a tool, eh?
