Scammers and maybe a few ideas on ways to prevent them

OK here's my 2 cents. I do not have a credit card. I therefore cannot buy a membership.I'm always willing to ship first because I am a newer member.Even though I have had 4 successful trades so far , In the middle of a 5th I only have 1 feedback. I am an honest guy, and really like this site and it's a shame so many people are being scammed. My advice is watch who you trade with, if something is fishy don't be afraid to ask someone to ship first or call off the trade. We have 206,734 members. I'm sure you are sick of hearing this, but there's always a bad apple in the bunch.Requiring membership would take away from me and many others one of the most enjoyable things about this website: the exchange. Besides, paying for a gold membership then scamming someone out of a $600 knife? You gain a lot more than you loose.

People just need to be careful and do their due diligence. Research the people you are trading with. Would you just send $400 to a random person with only their name and address if they told you they would send it back? Probably not.

Check feedback and request they send first, problem solved. That's been the practice for a lot of folks here anyway.

I frequent several other forums; knives, guns, watches etc., that have varying requirements in place before allowing members to use, or even access, the classified sections. Not saying that these solve the problems 100% but I imagine they go a long way in deterring the scammers. Some combination of these might be worth considering for BF. For example:

1. Higher cost of membership to sell which BF already has. Maybe require Gold to Buy/Sell/Trade.

2. Minimum time of membership before you can access classified areas. I have seen as little as 1 month which seems negligible up to 1 year which seems a bit extreme.

3. Post count. One forum I frequent requires 50 posts minimum on an ongoing basis. "Gee that's Cool", "That rocks", "+1" and these types of posts do not count. You must engage in meaningful dialogue. The idea being that the classifieds are for the actual contributors to the forum and not another ebay.

4. Seller/Buyer/Trader status must be requested and approved. I assume some checking of your forum history is looked at.

If you make it more difficult to Sell/Trade/Buy than just buying a membership and commencing commerce I believe it would eliminate a fair amount of this. Nothing will be perfect but I do believe it could be screwed down a bit more than it's current status.

You don't need a BF rule for that. Just restrict your own trades to people with your own membership level.

I don't do trades unless I know the person, and we usually do it over the phone. I was only suggesting that to help others.

I like those ideas myself.

Yea ptradeco that sounds like a couple of the forums I am members of , while they are a lot smaller than bladeforums you can kind of trust people a little more, and as far as they guy saying he can't afford a membership? I don't have a credit card either, but yet I buy knives online, I buy other things online, and I don't have a credit card, you can A get a debit card, or B use paypal, sure if someones determined to scam you a 10 dollar fee won't stop them from stealing your knife, but It would detour a lot of folks , they would say hmmm now you haft to pay to trade and move on to another forum where it's free. A basic membership is like 10 bucks, next knife purchase you make hold off or what until you get an extra 10 dollars, open you up a paypal account and donate 10 dollars to the site. I mean even when I was just a basic member and only doing trades I got lucky and got some really good trades I started with a few 50 -60 dollar knives and ended up with knives that cost 100-200 bucks a piece so people are making profit off their trades no reason why one can't give back to the place that's allowing them to make some profit. Like when my gold membership expires I believe I may go platinum just to support the site.

The knife community is much smaller than you may realize. Sure, you can scam one, two, maybe a couple dozen people. But the reputation you build follows you everywhere. You end up soiling your name and end up the subject matter of many threads across the whole Internet, knife forums, gun forums, watch forums, etc. the world is not the large anonymous place it once was. Things you do maliciously always come back to haunt you. Just like the good, kind, and generous thongs people do light their way across the web. It's a 2 way street.

Pardon me for interjecting into a discussion in which I may have no right or sovereignty to express myself, but if I may, I would like to throw a new persons perspective into the mix.
Often times on the job, I don't express myself, or care to, if I can't really move the discussin or solution along further--unfortunately I don't know that I can offer much with this topic, other than a single perspective of someone who is new here.
I like many came here for the discussions of like minded individuals with common interests. I came here for the ability to learn from the people with more or DIFFERENT knowledge and experiences than myself. But it is also safe to say that I came here with the possible intent to trade, or buy knives.--I, like all of you, I can only assume, came here for many of the same reasons. That being said, I came here with full knowledge that there ARE other options for auctions, wholesale, surplus, or deep discount sales--BUT I feel HERE is where I will not have to "weed" through scammers (the ones that make eBay into Fleabay), and to know that the "feedback" score actually means something.(in a smaller community the feedback is more accurate-versus an enormous group (with a very .."curved" scale)).
And-again-I apologize that I can't directly begin to address or offer executable solutions, but as an FNG, I CAN say this: I can join many free sites to place myself in a position to trade or buy. But a small fee or verification hoop seems a small act(s) to perform in order to have a higher caliber community (and experience/knowledge to draw from) than any of the other free or large scale auction sites. (and thus-perhaps the stance should be with the priority of protection for the community as a whole, rather than worrying about what is convenient or "right" for the initial "dues" or what you have to do to 'start up'.

Am I saying I WANT to throw money your way, no. ---but Would I have paid a fee if I had to, to be a member/ to have access,..yes.

Do I want everyone I come into contact with having my personal info.-no---am I willing to release that info in order to prove I am who I say?-sure.( ..as long as it is used and handled properly.)

Would I have waited a month to sign up for eBay.-doubtful.---would I have sat on the sidelines and watched you guys have all the fun for a month in order to be able to play in your reindeer games?--hell, yes.(and it would have saved me from splurging so much so fast, and having to have to listen to the wife complain.)-

-but in all seriousness--what exactly ARE the terrible downfalls of a small fee, verified ID, or a small waiting period before action can be taken?

Again-I am new here, so take my rambling(s) for what it is worth-but..as a new guy, I'd rather have a few hoops to go through and have a better place to call home, than a home that lets just anybody in because they are afraid of the hoops...

Just the FNG's .02
