The thread about the paypal scam got me to thinking about a scam that got me just last week. I was checking my checking account online when I noticed some strange charges. I was billed by AOL for a month of service, and I don't have AOL as a provider! I also noticed several payouts to ebay when I've YET to buy anything from ebay. Right away I knew I was in trouble! I called my bank and had the debit/cc associated with this account canceled to prevent further charges. I then had to call AOL, E-Bay, PayPal, and my bank. I spent the better part of the afternoon waiting and talking and then writing a letter of dispute. Everything worked out as the money was replaced, and I'm not talking a few dollars here, we are talking HUNDRED's!! Had I not decided to check my account for another several days I might have had nothing to check on.

Hey Art....The same thing happened to me. A year ago I was being billed automaticaly on one of my credit cards every month for AOL service. I never use AOL or ever authorized them to to this. When I finaly noticed it, 6 months had passed. I notified AOL and they claim I agreed to it. I never did and I don't know how they got my credit card. They never reinbursed me the 6 mos.

One thing you have to be careful of is when online service is provided with a product. Buy the product with a credit card and it automatically starts an online service.

I had this happen to me, bought some stuff with a CC from best buys and they threw in a "free" MSN packet. I told them I didn't want it, they said just throw it away when you get home. 3 months later I'm billed all at once for 3 months of MSN. Turns out Best Buy lied about what they where doing and they signed me up for MSN. I disputed it and it worked out OK. Subsequently there's been class action suits brought against Best Buy for doing this.

I heard of a new scam yesterday that I don't know is true or not but does give pause for thought....

You receive a call from a person claiming to be with your credit card. He says there is some unusual activity and even names some purchases. You reply you didn't buy them. They never ask for your CC number or anything but they do ask you to read off the numbers on the back. You do and on the next month's bill is the charge the guy mentioned.

Since CC's are now using the code on the back to verify the person. It's very important to not give it away lightly. I suggest if you get a call from a CC rep you immediately hangup and call the CC company back yourself and verify the problem.
