Fellow Fiddlebackers,
I personally love a good scandi knife. Perhaps it's in my blood as my ancestors are Scandinavian. Perhaps it's because the types of trees we have here in Colorado are very similar to what's found in Scandinavia where this type of grind originates. There seems to be some buzz lately around scandi ground Fiddlebacks. Whenever one pops up, it's gone pretty quick. They're becoming rarer since Andy isn't cranking them out any longer, posting "Au-revoir Scandi edges!" Whenever the topic of scandi comes up in a thread, I get PMs asking me to sell mine. I also get questions about how mine have held up as there's a perception (earned or not) that scandi edges are weak.
While my mom taught me to always share, I have a hard time giving these up (sorry mom). So I thought I'd do the next best thing, a pass around. After using one for the first time, Comprehensivist changed his mind about scandi's (see our "Trio Exchange" thread) to the point that he's on the lookout for one now. I thought other folk might like to try one out as well.
I've decided to pass around my Arete in scandi. It's 1/8" O1, OD over natural and white. This is my favorite color combination on a handle. It will come in a sheath that I made that's nothing fancy, but should keep it safe and secure. A note on how I keep my scandi edges: I sharpen them to a zero grind with sandpaper on granite tile and then I strop on a very fine micro bevel. I've found that even just a couple of passes on the strop makes the edge significantly tougher. Stropping will bring it back to sharp and occasionally I'll take the sandpaper to it and get it back to zero. I do not want to get into any religious wars about what a "true" scandi edge is. If you want to discuss that, please send it via PM and not here.
Please see the following rules:
Sorry for the dramatics - I really do want this to be a fun opportunity, but I've seen too many of these go south with people abusing the pass around and the knife. I understand that accidents happen and won't hold you responsible if something happens while using the knife in a reasonable way. If you do something like baton it through a cinderblock with an iron pipe, I hope you'll do the right thing and replace my knife. Please remember this is not a manufacturer sending out a knife, this is my personal knife.
If I haven't scared you off yet and you'd like to participate, please send me a PM. I'll maintain the list here and once we're full, I'll put together the sequence and get everyone's shipping address. When it's time to ship to the next person, ping me for the info.
The List:
1. RRaconteur
2. cactus paddle
3. Comprehensivist
4. Cimarron56
5.
6. Talfuchre
Of course, what good is a thread without pics:

Please see the following rules:
- Maximum of 6 participants (subject to change).
- Gold Member or higher.
- US only (sorry, this is to keep shipping times down and shorten the overall pass around time).
- Contributor to the Fiddleback Forum - I reserve the right to determine who qualifies for this one.
- 21 years or older and it's legal to receive the knife via mail and use it in your location.
- You don't currently own a 4"ish Fiddleback with a scandi grind.
- You have time to put the knife through it's paces on some woodworking project. Feel free to use it in the kitchen as well, but this is a woods knife. This does not need to be some major, overwhelming task. Try-Stick, spoon, split wood fire for smores, etc.
- This is not a destruction test. Please don't try to break one of my favorite knives! But please do put it through it's paces in a normal usage way.
- You must post a review including the following:
- Pictures and/or video of the knife in use in a wood project.
- How the knife performed (good or bad) in the tasks you threw it at.
- A statement about how your perception of Scandi grind blades has changed (or not) after you used this knife.
- You are responsible for shipping costs to send it to the next participant via USPS Priority (or equivalent) with insurance and tracking. You will send me the tracking number.
- You may keep the knife for up to two weeks.
- If the knife needs sharpening and you're not comfortable or do not have the tools for sharpening a scandi, you will send it to me before passing on to the next person. (see above note about damaging one of my favorite knives
). Normally though a few passes on a strop should bring it back in shape enough. (see my other note above about how I maintain my scandi edges).
- I have the right to end the pass around at any point.
