I would like opinions from the folks here that use there knives in the outdoors. I have had this idea of a scandi grind locking folder kicking around in my head for some time and I am getting ready to jump into the deep end.

Two likely candidates that I have come up with to mod are. the boker Exskelibur

or the Buck Vantage

Which blade shape and handle contour do you think would make a better scandi style knife? And why? I have my thoughts but would love to hear yours.

My plan is to use 01 tool steel for the blades.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I think that the Boker handle would be more comfortable for use in the grips typically used in bushcraft. The handle of the Vantage, while very comfortable, lends itself more towards the grips used for things like opening packages. :)

I like the looks of the Boker and have been considering one for EDC, but I am the opposite end of the opinion from fortytwoblades. I think the Buck's shape would be more comfortable, for me anyway, for gripping and leverage in cutting away because of the thickness/meatiness at the back. I think it would be more stable and comfortable against the pocket of the palm. One thing I dislike about my WK-1 is the clip; it isn't comfortable during use and I took it off. Maybe if it were at the back like the Buck, it would be better. But, if not, I'd loose it.

Of the two I'd prefer the profile of the Boker. The reason being it is the closest to the Moki profile I'd base one on if I were doing it. I have a Moki as depicted below. It is simply the most versatile and nimble folder shape I have ever worked. I love the liveliness of it. It's just the right shape for so many grips: It is as at home held like a steak knife as it is with the thumb on top pointing a twig. It has just the right amount of curvature to give a very satisfactory cut edge up on the pull. And it palms so well working the tip is as easy as working back at the handle. I bought it precisely because of these attributes as it is a fine blade essential to me when dexterity is paramount. The package profile winds all that together wonderfully. If I wanted a folding Scandi I would surely hang it on this profile.

That's why the Boker.

The Bernie Garland folder is really pretty but out of my price range.

Ejes where did you get that folder?

As to the thread I like the Bokers handle shape better.

I've handled neither but from the pics the Buck seems more contoured while the Boker seems more like flat slabs, so I'd rather get the Buck.

Ejes where did you get that folder?

If you search eBay for bushcraft folding knife you can find both models (one with clip, one w/o) from a seller in Finland. That's the only place I know of that they're easily available.

I have the Buck in s30v and I love it, I can't see why it would not work well for you.

Scandi ground, locking folder?
Sit on your cash a while and wait for the Enzo folder to be released!

That's interesting but unless I'm missing something I can't tell if it's a locking blade or not. The drawings aren't really clear one way or the other.

I did find some pics here that appear to show a lock but they aren't the best either.

fallkniven needs a scandi folder, I already love the looks of their hunter series. SIGARMS made a full ground folder a while back, it was a sick looking knife.

If you are really interested in the Boker look at the originals made by Burger knives @ www.swordcane.com. Contact Trevor and ask if he cant make you a custom one? Just a thought. I have been thinking the same thing lately with my Burger Large EXK but have not asked Trevor if he will do it.

All and all I have used the LEXK doing bushcraft with the Chest lever grip, normal grip, reverse grip as my basic grips and have found the handle very comfortable. Even in the ice pick grip it is comfortable, but I do not use that often.

Thank you very much Marthinus for your input. I will consider contacting him and see if he would be willing to do this. Good to hear that you have been using this knife and it appears comfortable in all multiple grips.
