Scandi influenced blade WIP

Once you get a groove started on one flat you can feel it then just roll it 90deg and it stays lined up and nice and square.
Hope I'm not derailing your thread- I love blacksmithing and get excited when I find a better way to do something- and a chance to pass it on. :)

Na thats great actually. I think it is better that anyone who gets something from this will also get tidbits from others that have either a different way or a better way (using the same tools, I know a power hammer and surface grinder and mill and well you get the picture) of doing it by all means.

Little update, I am filing out the gaurd tonight and will post a few pics of any progress I make. This is one time I wish I had a mill. Ahh well one of these days, in the mean time its all about patience and good files.

Well didnt get too much done today. Cut the gaurd stock from some 303 stainless. Oversize enough to make sure I dont come up short anywhere. Scribe a center line and mark off the width of the blade. Be sure to mark where it will taper as well, you dont wanna get it filed out and find you took the thicker portion down to far. This is where having a mill would be very nice. Going with files takes a little while. I got some of it finished today but need to file a V at the bottom and continue fitting.

Marked and alignment punches set.

Here Ive drilled two holes then started filing. Very important to keep your file work even and neat. Take it out of the vise often to ensure your not drifting off to one or the other side. I also sprayed the tang with blue to see where it hangs at. Makes it much easier to see.

Thats about all I got done today. Got distracted with playing with a Hamon (sorry James Ill get more done tomorrow). Plus Ive found that when doing file work like this it is good to take brakes from filing. Keeps your head in the game sort to speak.

Wow! Very good idea with the blue on the tang!
Looks good!

Mccandmatt it depends on the neighbor lol. Some of the houses are empty for various reasons, my old retired neighbor just tells me to hit it like I mean it. I keep the forging work to decent hours and what not.

Great WIP , nice pics. also agree that the best way to deal with neighbors is to avoid problems by keeping decent hours. bonus on the cool retired neighbor.

Hey Quint,

Not meaning to hijack your thread, but do you have a link to that burner? I have tried several and haven't been satisfied yet with my results on burners.

Hey guys just wanted ya all to know I have not forgotten about this. I just started a new job and it has thrown a damper in my knife making over the last week and kind of rearranged my schedule. I will be finishing this just gonna take a little bit. Will be sure to report more progress as I complete it.

Really disappointed that this never got finished, but moving on. I will start over or just learn to make one myself.
