Scandi Tweener???

I can take "harsh" what I cannot stand is BS.

Hollow ground or flat the FACT is that the Saber grind on the Camilus Survival knives are SO short that it is not that same thing as the Beckers. Yep, I get a bit "rowdy" when some on tries to tell me the moon is made of green cheese.

YOU are trying to "set the bar" here by making false claims that you can take an ALREADY SABER GROUND BECKER BLADE and make it into an acceptable Scandi. It BS pure and simple.

And, to ease you mind about my abilities as a Craftsman/knifemaker here is the First blade I ever ground on my shop several years ago. It's a 1/8" thick full height convex blade. It's made of D2 and so far has performed any similarly Sized Bark River Blade I have ever owned. I would never claim to be the finest craftsman in the world, but at Least I have a basic understanding of blade geometry and what is possible on an already ground blade.

I also don't need to waste my time trying to covert perfectly good factory knives into homemade flea market junk. Ethan's Tweeners are just fine as they are and anyone who would try to covert any of them to a scandi is an idiot .

I'll bite my tongue on what I'd really like to say. Just let this man spend his money how he wants to and let him do with his property however he wants to.

Blazer.

It's not about Modding knives. Hell anyone CAN do whatever they want with their knives- even if it's dumb. My point is either there is enough steel to do it right or there is not. And so far NONE of the guys claiming it can be done have explained exactly how they would do it. Because you cannot put steel back on a blade that KABAR has already ground off.;)

Well,

LOOK at the post I was responding to.

I am not running for mayor here.

If someone floats total BS by me I call them on it. Like I said, If it's possible to make ANY Saber ground Becker into an Acceptable true Scandi knife, I sure would like to see that

Nice knife. Looks good.
I like long walks on the beach and IPA, and taking perfectly good production knives and making them my own...I don't think your gonna like it here.
Everyone ..well almost everyone, has taken their knives and turned them into "Flea Market Junk" as you say. How about you go over to the knife makers arena and tell them what to do.
I bet that will go over really well.
JIM,
How is your stating your opinion over and over making what your saying more "true"? You don't think anyone can grind an 1/8" thick knife into a scandi? I don't follow your thinking...but whatever. You want to think I am full of BS...go for it. Your a keyboard commando toughguy...I don't really care what you think.
Maybe someday...oh someday, we can get along. but I doubt it.

Same to you..

And I do agree, the thread is getting off topic.. And the OP certainly DOES need all the luck he can get trying to obtain a scandi ground Becker..

Have a good evening.;)

It turns out we have an ignore list on here. That's neat, I forgot about that

The bottom line is you CANNOT make even a Saber ground Becker blade into a Scandi unless you grind a hell of a lot of metal off the bottom profile of the blade. Even then, it would look like dog crap.

The good news is at least you are not bitter about this whole subject...

If the man wants to try it, who the hell are we to tell him not to...if someone wants to take a bk9 and grind it down to a remora, then hell, go for it.

Yup, the dang thing works to...man, oh wow...is the sun rising?? Its getting nice around here.
Randori,
good topic, bad thread...it happens to the best of us..sorry for my part.

Keeping this thread on topic I'll say that I'm not a huge fan of scandi's but if it were a becker I'd at least try it out.

I am not bitter at all, Just expressing in informed opinion that such a knife would look look pure Dog crap.

And Like I said, I agree that if someone wants to ruin a perfectly good Becker with permanently done and ill advised Blade grind mods -go for it.

But it's a lot like setting purposely your car on fire. Just because you can do it, sure as heck does not make it very smart.

I would as well ,if the blade were designed to be a Scandi at the factory.

Right!
I used to buy the heck outta them, and I still have some that have sentimental value. I do have to admit..I am sick of the edge chipping out.
I have one ( a Mora) that I carry at work, and it holds up well, I convexed the heck outta the edge.

The idea has merit, and I would love to see one, hell, I'd probably pay through the nose for one! I think a scandivex would be truly beast!

Discuss the topic.

Not each other.

Anymore of this and its locked.

Infractions may come after that.

Thanks.

Actually, I started this thread to see if it would be a good idea. According to the majority of the posts...it seems as though it would not be a good idea.

The way that opinion was presented was more negative than informative...but seems like that adding a scandi to a becker is not a popular opinion. So that question is answered.

My next thread will be about making micarta handles out of tampons.......

Seems some folks don't wanna play nice.

well, i guess i too that warning about derailing thread /staying on topic / etc down too soon?

folx, this is what i'm talking about. DO NOT DO THIS.

randori - interesting idea, and one that i think should be been discussed civilly with pictures, and arrows, and descriptions of why and why not.

gunknifenut - i look forward to your attempt at a scandi grind. perhaps you can post with pictures and design notes

jim62 - first post was a good start, but unfortunately, went downhill fast with descriptive language - i would appreciate you using a more polite conversational tone, yah? consider this your warning for the future.

rest of y'all diving in? i told you already, save it for snark. no more mr nice mods. Ethan's house rules, yo?

personally, i don't like closing threads, future derailments will be adjusted to save good threads. unfortunately, i was away and did not catch this in time. OP, if you feel you have a point to address still, make the attempt. same for gunknifenut. even jim62, if you can describe, in a more technical way than "looks like crap" why it won't work, or why it's potentially just a waste of time, go for it.
