Scandifying a couple of Tops knives?

I got to looking at a couple of Tops knives this morning- really not my usual favor, just cuz I aint a badass soldier dude that has a regular need to field dress T-72 tanks.

I got to looking at the grind on a couple of them, and it seems like they'd be mighty fine knives for my more benign woodsloafing purposes if I simply Scandified them a bit.

These are the three that caught my eye (first two that originally caught my eye are the ATM and the Lil' Bro)

I don't need the stout, thick grinds they use from the factory, but if I just leveled them off to a Scandi grind....They seem like they'd be perfectly suited camping, woodsloafing type of knives for me.

whaddya' think? Am I so brilliant that I've come full circle back to p!ss stupid, or does it sound like a good (and plausible) idea?

thanks for any input!

Just dont get the Scandi thing. Really I dont. Hate the name it grates on my nerves haah.

Tried it not impressed.

Ill stay with simple convex.

Scandi scandi scandi.... Finger nails on chalk board, cringe.

LMAO :)

FWIW, I kicked around the idea of raising the edge a crapload and convexing as well. But my first choice would be the dreaded SSSSCCCCAAANNDDDIIIINNNAAAVVVVIIIIAAAANNNN grind. IF that doesn't work out, I can try for convex.:D:D

That Hunter model looks really nice.

But I personally like this 5" one better, already convexed, and would pocket the $40 (maybe buy a wetterlings hatchet with the change). Of course the barkriver sandstorm is stainless so not everyone's cup of tea

Then Again, Nothing is as Randy as a good 'ole Scandi.....

Scandis are some of my favorites. I find a convex edge is easier to maintain and sharpen.

Instead of modding a TOPS I'd just find a decent scandi you like..

Skam.... you and I should never meet;):)

I have never disagreed with someone more that the majority of your posts.......HOWEVER YOU GET ME TO THINKING AND THAT IS A GOOD THING:thumbup::cool:

I have all the above IE scandi, hollow, flat, and convex. My "ideal" all around blade is a convex (we see eye to eye... world should stop now;)) but the benefits of a scandi grind should not be tossed aside just yet.

Fantastic for wood carving. I convex a secondary edge bevel on my moras and they WORK very well as general outdoor camp and cook tool. In fact I carried one exclusively for a year. Fishing, camping, elk camp (did not get to cape/skin/field dress one I should add) but it performed well.

O.P. I'm with ya. Not my normal flavor but I agree with you for the most part. 1095 steel, good scale material, can't go too wrong with a few changes.

Should point one more thing out:D:D:D...

to us here that know how to sharpen a convex grind it is "simple" but to a lot of knife users the convex grind is as confusing as understanding "string theory" while tossing back Jack Daniels during a Hooters parade.

Scandis are much more "simple" than convex grinds to the average user.

I've already got a collection of Scandi and convex knives that's threatening to overwhelm my gun safe at any time. I just don't have a Scandi Tops yet.

I get reallllllly sweet deals on Tops knives, so that's a little more comforting for me.

I personally find the convex to be simple to maintain, as long as I have sandpaper, 1" belt sander, good strops, etc. Actually, It's not that bad in the field either- at worst it gets sharpened like a flat grind.

Being a lousy hunter, I just tend to find myself whittling, and doing camp work far more than anything else, and Scandi edges are just freakin' awesome when it comes to around the camp general chores.

I think the mod is possible. Won't take away too much steel- should be pretty easy to define the angle I want. I can't afford a dedicated carbon steel Bushcraft, spear point style knife, but that Hunter looks like it would yield exactly that if successful. Lil' Bro would go in a pocket, and I haven't really found a place for the ATM yet, but I bet it'll be still be cool when I'm done!:D

I've got more camping knives than myself and the next half dozen generations could use in a life time, but that doesn't keep me from still wanting to play I guess....:o

I'm sure it is. As mentioned, 1095 steel is a great outdoor/all around steel IMNSHO. Bit expensive for mod to me, but could be done with patients, a good set of stones, and some more patients. ;)

Good luck if you give it a shot.

I really like that Mohawk. I would not give it a Scandi grind, but a nice full flat, with a secondary edge bevel. That would be a nice knife, after having it rehardened to about 65 HRC....

I know you probably won't believe me here bro but only this week I was looking at some of the TOPS knives and thinking the exact same thing. The grind just looks like it would give itself readily to a Scandi Mod !!!
Maybe when my WolfPup gets all scratched up I will give it a try on that !!!

I'm about five minutes from ordering the Hunter, and a UTE.

I do like the shape of the Little Bro for what I've got in mind better, but I just can't justify that kind of price difference between the two.

Unfortunately, it's about time for me to go back to Prudhoe for awhile, but I'll get to them as soon as I get home. I'll letcha know how it works out.:D

Tarmix- Patience? I aint got none of that....but I do have a 1" belt sander and a coffee can full of cold water.:D
