Anyone ever heard of a sharpening system called scary sharp? It involves sand paper 220-4000 grit and a piece of tempered glass...........please advise

WELCOME Damon, get a piece of glass cut to the size you like. buy sand paper and a can of non stick adhesive and your in biz, with your own sharping system:cool:

Am feeling both enlightened and totally confused after reading this thread, and using the link, and reading the very well-written tale of sharpening the plane blade.

First item of confusion: The glass. Need it be tempered? Any old kind of glass? Minimum thickness or thinness?

Total confusion: What is non-stick adhesive? Aren't those opposites? Sort of a double oxymoron or something? I'd really appreciate help on this one.

Thanks in advance,

Hard and flat surface is what you need. Any ol glass will probably do thogh tempered glass is probably easy to get. How thick? Doesn't mater, really. Just make sure it is flat.

Non stick adhesive means that you can spray some on some paper and "glue" it to your glass, but when you need to change paper you can peel it off relatively easily and put on different paper. I set up my disc sander in a similar fashion. I contact cemented some cork onto my disc (cork came in a sheet from a knfie amking supply place) and then I used cork adhesive wich workes the same way as non stick adhesive. When the paper wears down, I peel it off, put a new square on, cut off the excess, and voila! my disc is ready to go and changes much ceaper than if I had to buy them pre-made discs.

bugs, how about the term, pressure sensitive adhesive, like PSA disc's. it is not a permenent bonding glue.

I believe 3-M calls it feathering disc adhesive (as in auto body paint repair), available in some auto part supply stores, and auto body repair/painting supply stores.
