I know that schrade sharpfinger is made by taylor knives in China now but I always wanted one and so I bought one for 20.00 bucks. I just want to say that although its made in china its a pretty good little knife. I am impressed. I wonder what steel is in the blade now. Can anyone tell me your thoughts on that knife?

The original Schrades UH in stainless were heavier and ground properly, and the Schrade OT in high carbon steel would take and hold an edge very nicely. You can still find both on eBay for a reasonable price.

Rigid made a Max Edge hunter on the Sharpfinger design that was far better than the Taylor, and they are currently selling on eBay for the same price as a Taylor ($20).

Weak point of the knife is the tip -- they have a tendency to snap if misused.

The sheath is an abomination -- if you want to carry a Sharpfinger you really need to invest $20 in a custom sheath.

They are one of my favorite knives and I own nearly a dozen.

I seen in SMKW that bear and sons sell a knife like a sharpfinger and made in the U.S. Does anyone know about that knife? I may get one. I dont know what it is about the sharpfinger design that I like so much but I just love that little knife.

The Sharpfinger style is, or has been, made by several companies. A great all round utility piece, also great for concealed defence carry if legal where you are. In fact, if someone called it 'tactical' Sharpfinger, it would no doubt sell for twice the price.
My stainless Camillius has quite a blocky handle and every edge, I don't mean the blade, is sharply squared off.
My carbon Schrade 502SC by contrast, has a lovely 'melted' finish, like a bar of soap, the sort of thing gunsmiths do to handguns to make them more user friendly.
So, the cheap Chinese one is fine for knockabout utility but it's such a great design that it's worth seeking out other variants. As previously stated, it's still cheap and easy to do on ebay but I suspect not for much longer.
Both of mine were made in U.S.A.

I also have a Camillius sharpfinger type knife that I bought from SMKWs not to long ago. The handle is black and blocky and the blade is sharp but to thin for my likeing. I only paid 12.00 for it. I figured it would be a collector one day. I wish the blade was thicker, then I would love it. The blade is thin and springy.

I got my Old Timer from Lowe's when they were closing them out years ago if I remember right for $12.50! I remember a 20 dollar bill covered it even with TN's outrageous sales tax. I have a weakness for 1095 and 52100 steel knives.

Are there any of the semi-custom/custom knife makers out there making a Sharpfinger copy on the semi-cheap?

Here's the finger with his big brother, the deerslayer - both in 1095 and still performing well:

Just got a Bear jigged bone "Sharpfinger" last month. Bear's quality control is hit or miss. New in box it has a bit of green mold on the handle, a water spot on the hilt, and the edge was dull as a butterknife.

You can find a Mint jigged bone "stag" Duck Stamp Sharpfinger on the eBay for around $80 + shipping.

I hate to say it guys but I put my new Taylor scharade sharpfinger beside my Camillius made Western sharpfinger and I like the Taylor one the best. The Camillius one is just to thin of a blade. Oh, its sharp and has some kind of sharp point but the tip is so week I think I can break it with my hand, (Im not gonna try it). The Western went right through the side of the sheath and now my sheath is torn. MMM. I wish I knew what steel the Taylor sharpfinger is made of. It just feels more solid in the hand and the blade is thicker. I like the Taylor brand the best. I want an American made Sharpfinger but my wife wont let me order anymore knives........

You can still find the American-made ones all the time on the 'bay. IMHO, worth the extra dough.

When my son took up hunting I gave him a Sharpfinger. He was going to start with rabbits and other small game and work his way up. I figured that a Sharpfinger handle anything smaller than an elk extremely well and would handle an elk OK.

To me the sharpfinger is a great design. I like the one I got pretty good but I do wish I had an american made one. Ill settle for the one I got though.

Buy yourself one for Christmas . . . a nice one with stag or jigged bone handles . . . and get a custom sheath for it. That's what I did. Total investment is about $100. Half that if you decide to go for a carbon steel OT-152 or one of the unetched cream delrin "bankrupcy knives." Orange handles are selling for more than stag for some reason. Bear is passable if you're willing and able to sharpen or reprofile the edge.

There is no comparison between the original carbon steel blades and the made in china Taylor LLC "sharpfingers."

If you really want one but don't want to spend a lot of money, you can find a USED sharpfinger with patina, spots, and possibly even a dull edge and rotten sheath on eBay for between $15 and $30. If you can clean it up with steel wool and WD-40, then resharpen it, you'll see what I'm talking about. Just be certain to check the seller's feedback and ascertain that the tip hasn't been snapped and reground before bidding. I've seen broken and rusty Sharpfingers for sale before.
