Special edition just got released and that mother of pearl shield just sets it off. I know this pattern and steel have been around, any insight would be appreciated. Been stuck in patina land for awhile and not sure if I want to jump into stainless....anyways, look at this guy
A handsome knife, as most all of the File & Wire pieces are. I assume they still ATS-34 for the steel on that series. Hope it comes with nice grinds and a good edge out of the box.
I think ATS - 34 is a pretty good Steel isnt it guys?
I love that knife, I am not too sure what the pearl shield would look like in "the flesh'.. but when I first heard of that I thought " Ooh I wonder what that would be like " could you let us know please Jeff of your thoughts kind Sir?
S& M knives have always had a good rep -I honestly will be surprised if you have issues with that lovely Jack Jeff.
Thanks Paul and yes, ats-34 it is. This will be my first experience with it.
Nate, I certainly hope it comes usable out of the box. I did get an amazon gift card for Christmas, think its about time I get a course diamond bench stone.
Ebony with that shield would be fantastic indeed. Never have handled camel bone before. Maybe they will add other handle materials in a future run.
Oh I am curious as well on the shield Duncan . It looks outstanding in the photo and I love how pearl glows in the light. Its smooth spot on such a great looking random jigging will hopefully be a very welcome accent.
That's a nice looking pattern. I've never seen camel bone in person. That's a good stainless steel. I have a couple Queen knives that I really like. I bet you'll be pretty satisfied!
That's a big one no messing, lot of blade on the master too-broad!
I was looking at some of these on a dealer's site the other day and the Camel bone and jigging look very impressive, I hope to see it on other Queen knives. I'm not so sure about that MOP shield , is it durable on a big knife like this? Don't actually see the appeal of it as metal shields are preferable in my view. Good to see something different though and Queen offering a new model is welcome.
Good lookin knife Jeff!
But I sure do wish Queen would make up there mind about the F&W series. Take this pattern for example, it was released about 1 year ago with the usual worm groove bone, as are all the other F&W knives. Now they come out with a jigged camel bone. #1, I don't understand jigging camel bone and why are they coming out with different covers after the original release. The knife released right after the Heavy Jack was the Kentucky Shiner in both a 4 3/4" and a 3 3/4" with worm grooved covers, then they released some with Stag covers. They did the same thing with the next release the Gunstock both large & smaller pattern and Stag & bone covers. Both the Shiner and the Gunstock have the Saturn shield.
Now don't get me wrong I love their ATS-34 and the F&W Series, I own every addition, even 2 of some of my favorite patterns, one to use, one mint.
I just wish they would make up my mind!
Dave
Obsessively the pearl shield is not pinned so keep an eye on it if you are going to use the knife.
Thanks for the steel info gents, I am looking forward to it now.
I share concerns for the shield as well. I have loved the look of the S & M knives for some time now, just had reserves about picking one up. I am looking at it this way.....they make knives for a living. This knife in particular with its size and heft is destined for hard use. If they fail as a manufacturer to figure those details out before they bring it to market well, my foray into Queen knives will be short lived. And I will find out how good the customer service is . I am hopefull that all will be fine and am looking forward to putting this new one to use. Now the big debate for me is......keep it a pen or grind it into a sheepsfoot. Have to wait untill I have it in hand before I make that call.
Eta: My GEC 55 houndstooth shield is pinned but they failed to glue it like all my others. It wiggles a tiny bit. Have not had an issue with it yet but I keep my eye on it. To my knowledge I have never owned an unpinned shield. I hope it holds up in the long run for sure and if not I hope queen will take care of it
This may be slightly off topic, but how would you compare Queen's ATS-34 with Queen's D2 in terms of ease/difficulty of sharpening, sharpness of the final edge, and edge holding?
