Schatt & Morgan #90 heavy jack

Bone looks nice, very much the carved stag bone that Queen used a while back; one of my favorites for knife cover material.

I briefly owned one of the series 6 heavy duty jacks with wormgroove bone handle. The name is fitting at 4" closed its a pretty large knife, it was a heavy tank of a knife. Pretty thick as well. The knife was well made but I let it go as it was bigger and heavier than what I wanted to carry on a daily basis.

This may be slightly off topic, but how would you compare Queen's ATS-34 with Queen's D2 in terms of ease/difficulty of sharpening, sharpness of the final edge, and edge holding?

I find Queen's ATS34 to be a fine steel. I have 2 in ATS34 and had one in D2. Except for the stainless properties, they are similar. Goth hold an edge and are reasonably hard. IIRC D2 is supposed to be harder, but my D2 was a toothpick, so it's not hard to sharpen that thin of a blade. I dislike the D2 finish, since I like shiny knives, so ATS34 is my hands down favorite. D2 does not get much of a patina, but also does not stay too shiny. It will pit easily when exposed to pickle juice. I gave the D2 one away to a toothpickless family member who does not care about dirty grey blades :)

I don't see a big difference between them in sharpening, but I use diamond hones. I've never run a side by side edge holding test between these two, so I can't comment on edge holding.

Just got this guy in and I am very happy with it. I will certainly buy with confidence right now on these new queens.

First a few pics

With a 66 jack

The pen on this big jack is very stout

The jigging feels great and that shield shines, love it. The camel bone is great

With 66 and 53/54 frames for size comparison

The fit and finish is pretty darn good in my book. No gaps in the back at all. Both blades came thin at the edge and hair shaving sharp. My only complaint and really its being picky, the main blades snap and spring tension is a little light. I love the little bit firmer action on the pen. To be fair I love nail breakers and preffer a very strong snap. The jigging texture is bliss in my hand and the shape and size are perfect. This is a great knife and I cant wait to use it. I do think the pen will get ground into a sheepsfoot but Ill live with the pen for a bit first.

Dont be scared by the weight. I dont notice it any more than my tk cuban and sliding it in a slip I all but forget its in there. Very happy with it and will report back after some use.

Very nice and very tempting! Sure looks like a big handful of knife and I have been looking for one with a stainless blade and this looks like it might fit the bill. How does the pull and snap compare to the Cuban?

Thanks Jeff! I really am pleased with it. This one is going to see a lot of pocket time for sure!

Jamie, I just compaired them both with my sak farmer. The cuban has the slightly stronger pull on the main blade vs the farmer. The secondary on the cuban is more a solid 7 and a ton of snap. The Cuban is certainly the smoothest and slightly strongest of the bunch. The sak is a hair stronger then the Heavy Jack but the Jacks pen is a bit stronger. If you prefer the pull of the sak's you will be happy with the other 2. It fills my hand perfectly and is very comfortable.

I have grown accustomed to GEC's deep nail nicks, they make it so easy to get leverage and on the cuban I can pinch the blade open. I can also one hand open it with my thumb thanks to the cam tang. The S&M nail nick is small and my thumb glides over it with little sensation of its presence yet, it is cut at the perfect angle and still gives great purchase. Just interesting to compair the slight differences in the details.

Thanks for taking the time to compare the two. As long as it is in the same ballpark as the Cuban then I will be happy. I am just not a big fan of easy pulls or mediocre snap, especially on a large knife. Apparently neither are you so that is reassuring. On the wish list it goes!

No problem at all. I just noticed the main blade has sliggt side to side play if I grab the tip. It is unnoticeable during normal use and very slight. The pen is rock solid.

Great-looking knife Jeff, look forward to seeing more of it  They seem to have done a much better job of jigging the camel bone than any of the recent Sheffield examples I've seen. Some of the Sheffield cutlers are using it as a replacement for stag, and the jigging looks clumsy and ugly.
